Stellantis invests in EV component production capacities in the USA
Stellantis has announced a multi-million dollar investment in three plants in Kokomo, Indiana, where the components for the upcoming electric models of the group’s US brands will be built. These models will then contribute to Stellantis’ goal of having every second of its vehicles in the US be electric by 2030.
The plants receiving investment are Indiana Transmission, Kokomo Transmission and Kokomo Casting. New electric drive modules manufactured at these plants are to be integrated into electric vehicles developed on the STLA Large and STLA Frame platforms. The transmission cover is cast at Kokomo Casting and machined at Kokomo Transmission. Machining of the transmission and final assembly is done at the Indiana Transmission plant.
The so-called Electric Drive Module, or EDM for short, combines the electric motor, power electronics and transmission. According to Stellantis, the “optimized efficiency of the new EDM will help each platform achieve driving range up to 500 miles (800 km)”. Production is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2024.
Stellantis aims to launch a total of 25 new battery-electric models by 2030. “While we continue our successful transition to a decarbonized future in our European operations, we are now setting those same foundational elements for the North American market,” says Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, adding: “By combining the benefits of the EDM with our new BEV-centric platforms and innovative battery technologies, we will offer our customers a variety of electric vehicles with unparalleled performance and range at more affordable prices. And with our in-house manufacturing capabilities and expertise, we will do it with greater flexibility and efficiency.”
The group says it has invested nearly $3.3 billion in its Indiana facilities since 2020 to further expand the construction of electric vehicles and e-components there. This includes the production of a new engine for conventional and plug-in hybrid applications, a next-generation eight-speed transmission and a joint venture for a battery factory with Samsung SDI.
