Green tech investor Heramba to take over Kiepe Electric

Investment company Heramba wants to buy Knorr-Bremse’s subsidiary Kiepe Electric. The latter specialises in the electrification of urban road and rail transport.

The Düsseldorf-based company develops, manufactures and implements power electronics products, hardware for electric drives and vehicle controls, and intelligent software for fleet management and energy management. Kiepe is also a specialist in charging solutions and a supplier of In-Motion Charging solutions – which allows the buffer batteries of trolleybuses to be recharged with power from the overhead line while the bus is in motion, enabling it to cover short distances without an overhead line. In 2022, Kiepe introduced its proprietary High Power Charging platform, which enables rapid vehicle charging and energy management for battery buses.

Heramba wants to acquire the company to “create a unique pure-play global leader in sustainable urban transportation.” It also aims to accelerate its expansion in the urban post-transport market. In addition, the company will be led by a “seasoned and experienced leadership team.”

In total, Kiepe Electric has 580 employees in six countries. The company’s turnover in 2022 was around 110 million euros. Heramba says it expects the acquisition to close this year, subject to customary closing conditions.

Heramba GmbH, which was only founded in January 2023 and is based in Berlin and Atlanta (USA), is a specialist company focused on investing in companies with technologies and capabilities that can accelerate the decarbonisation of commercial transport.

“The acquisition of Kiepe Electric is an exciting step forward for our team,” says Hans-Jörg Grundmann, Managing Director of Heramba. “Since its foundation, Kiepe has demonstrated a long history of evolving its business to deliver innovative solutions. With a focus on enabling sustainable mass transit, a portfolio of high-quality products and services, long-standing partnerships with leading global customers and an attractive backlog, we believe Kiepe is in a position to become a leader in commercial electrification.”
