CATL has secured the first two customers for its new extra fast-charging LFP battery. Avatr and Neta will be the first Chinese electric car brands to use the Shenxing battery.

It is unknown which Neta and Avatr models will use the Shenxing battery. Avatr, a joint venture of Changan, CATL and Nio, has a coupe-like electric SUV called Avatr 11 on offer and introduced the luxury sedan Avatr 12 in September. Neta belongs to Hozon Auto and already has several electric models on the market – such as the 4.80-metre-long Neta S sedan. The first models with Shenxing batteries will likely be larger cars.

CATL launched the Shenxing battery in mid-August and, after starting production in China at the end of 2023, will also manufacture it in its European plants in Germany and Hungary. The LFP battery can be charged with up to 4C – the charging power (in kW) is four times the battery size (in kWh). Theoretically, a full charge is possible in 15 minutes. According to CATL, electricity for 400 kilometres can be recharged in ten minutes.

It is not surprising that these two brands are the first manufacturers to receive the new battery. As mentioned, CATL is directly involved in Avatr as a joint venture partner. The strategic cooperation with Neta has been in place since 2021. This January, it was announced that Neta will also be the first Chinese EV start-up to use the CIIC skateboard chassis developed by CATL for its electric cars.
