Norway: 7,516 new electric cars in October

Norway recorded a decline in electric car registrations in October. 7,516 new EVs were registered there last month, 1,484 fewer than in September. The long-term leader of the model ranking also took a hit.

In September, there were precisely 9,000 new EVs, according to the Road Information Agency (OFV). Since the total number of new passenger car registrations also fell in October, it was still enough for an EV market share of 84.2 per cent. In October 2022, there were still 9,727 new electric passenger cars.

Across all drive types, 8,925 new cars were registered in Norway in October 2023, a decline of 28.9 per cent – already less than pure BEVs in September.

The 7,516 electric cars were joined by 635 new plug-in hybrids (7.2 per cent market share), slightly more than in September (617). That means that in October, 8,151 new cars had a plug, corresponding to a market share of 91.3 per cent.

Registrations of vehicles without a charging connection continued to decline in Norway. Full hybrids still accounted for 489 vehicles, 49.9 per cent fewer than in October 2022. 87 new petrol cars represent a rounded market share of 1.0 per cent (down from 2.1 per cent in the same month last year), and 198 new registrations of diesel cars also represent a further decline in market share (from 3.7 to 2.2 per cent).

The model ranking in Norway was once again led by the Tesla Model Y in October – however, with 648 new registrations, this time only by a relatively small margin. Second and third place went to the Toyota bZ4X (553) and the Skoda Enyaq (533). While it was a relatively strong month for the bZ4X with 4,039 new registrations so far this year, as well as for the Enyaq (4,895), 648 new registrations for the Model Y are meanwhile below-average. So far, 20,223 Model Y were registered in Norway in 2023 (or 19.4 per cent of all new Norwegian registrations this year). That means 2,000 Model Y per month on average.

Fourth place goes to the new Hyundai Kona, with 440 new registrations, just ahead of the Volvo XC40 (427 new vehicles). It is followed by the Ford Mustang Mach-E (352) ahead of the first hybrid model, the Toyota Yaris (326) and the VW ID.4 with 286 new registrations. Usually, the ID.4 is among the top 3 models in Norway. In October, however, VW’s EV could only outsell the Nissan Ariya (280) by six vehicles, for example. For the year to date, however, the ID.4 remains in second place with 6,118 units.
