BYD delivers electric buses to Mexico

BYD Mexico has delivered the first batch of 20 electric buses to Mexico City Metrobús. It is the manufacturer's largest bus fleet delivery in a single shipment to Mexico to date.

The buses are 15 metres long and have a range of 200 kilometres, according to BYD. Public transport operator Mexico City Metrobús even mentions a range of 246 kilometres.

The 300 kWh battery can be charged in “as little as three hours,” says BYD. They have room for up to 130 passengers and provide “barrier-free facilities and equipment, especially for people with disabilities, and lower the suspension height to offer a convenient and comfortable barrier-free travelling experience for passengers with special needs.”

All 55 buses will go into operation on Line 4 in Mexico City – from from Pantitlán and Alameda Oriente to Hidalgo. It covers 35 kilometres and 40 stations and is used by about 120,000 passengers daily, according to BYD.

“Zero-emission, sustainable solutions for transportation operations are essential,” says Rosario Castro Escorcia, General Director of the Mexico City Metrobús. “Since 2018, we have been working on transportation technology reforms, and this partnership with BYD is an important expression of the transition to electrification of Mexico’s public transportation system.”

The public transport operator Mexico City Metrobús had ordered a total of 55 BYD buses. According to del Rosario Castro Escorcia, another 18 units have already arrived in Mexico City and the remaining 17 are on their way from China to complete the 55 renovated buses.
