Tesla production in Germany to pause at the end of January

Tesla has to largely halt production at its German plant for around two weeks. According to Tesla, the reason for this is that the attacks by the Yemeni Huthi rebels on merchant ships in the Red Sea have created a gap in the supply chains.

“The armed conflicts in the Red Sea and the associated shifts in transport routes between Europe and Asia via the Cape of Good Hope are also having an impact on production in Gruenheide,” Tesla stated. “Due to a lack of components, we are forced to suspend vehicle production in the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg between 29 January and 11 February, with the exception of a few sub-areas. Production will resume in full from 12 February,” Tesla told the German publication Handelsblatt.

This is the first production stop in Grünheide. Tesla has been producing the Model Y at the factory there since March 2022. The US electric car manufacturer stated the production capacity there at 375,000 vehicles in the latest quarterly report. Previously, the figure had always been 250,000. In the medium term, Tesla plans to increase the potential output to one million by expanding the plant.
