Honda provided an update on the conversion of its plants in the US state of Ohio for the production of electric cars. These are apparently progressing somewhat faster than originally planned, so Honda is now aiming to start production of electric cars at the Marysville Auto Plant (MAP) by the end of 2025 instead of 2026 as previously communicated. As reported, the joint battery cell factory of Honda and LG Energy Solution in Ohio with an annual production capacity of around 40 GWh is also scheduled to go online at the end of 2025.

Honda has stated that it plans to hire 300 associates to work at its Ohio EV Hub, while 300 associates at the Marysville Auto Plant will upskill for IPU assembly. Furthermore, Honda committed to investing at least $700 million to transform its Marysville Auto Plant, East Liberty Auto Plant (ELP) and Anna Engine Plant (AEP). These three facilities will represent the heart of the EV Hub, which will supply the North American and global markets, once it is complete. At first, the MAP will produce both combustion and electric vehicles on the same line, which Honda then plans to use as “a strategic advantage to quickly respond to shifting market demand.”

“The establishment of our EV Hub is not simply an investment in retooling and equipment, we are investing in the Honda associates who will be taking on new responsibilities to lead us into the electrified future,” said Bob Nelson, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Our EV Hub in Ohio is playing an essential and strategic role for the evolution of EV production at Honda, in North America and globally.”

Honda calculates that is has invested $19 billion in its US manufacturing operations, including more than $3.6 billion over the past five years.
