Nobina goes all in on electric buses for Malmö

The Swedish transport authority Skånetrafiken has just awarded public transport provider Nobina the contract to operate and expand bus services in Malmö for twelve years from June 2027. Nobina has pledged to ensure that 95 per cent of the 300 buses the company operates in Malmo will be electric by 2027, with the rest electrified in the years shortly after.

The new contract awarded to Nobina also includes its commitment to build two new depots, which are to be operational by the start of the contract in June 2027. The public transport operator is also committed to further expanding the “MalmöExpressen” lines, on which Van Hool electric buses around 24 meters long are currently running.

Nobina has been procuring new electric buses since 2017. Many are from Volvo, but there are also 22 electric buses from MAN. The most recent order this summer was for 18 articulated electric buses from Solaris.

Nobina describes itself as the largest public transport company in Scandinavia employing some 13,000 people. The bus operator is active in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. “We are delighted to have been awarded this new contract in Malmö,” says Martin Pagrotsky, Managing Director of Nobina Sweden. “Together with Skånetrafiken, we can further expand and improve public transportation for the residents of Malmö. We look forward to building on the current strong ridership growth and welcoming even more satisfied travellers.”
