Superchargers in Sweden without power
More than 100 new Superchargers thus remain offline. Tesla Charging Director Max de Zegher criticised the sympathy strikes in a post on social media. “Despite no clear path yet to getting turned on, we will also continue to invest and build sites for Swedish EV drivers, including more capacity in Malung, Käppen, Vansbro, Idre, Särna, and Sunne,” he added. “We appreciate the support from the public to help us get Superchargers energised asap.”
The conflict between the trade union and Tesla Sweden has been ongoing since 2023. It started because Tesla workers do not have a collective agreement. With the sympathy strikes, IF Metall hopes to get the EV maker back to the negotiation table. Other unions have now also announced sympathy strikes.
However, Tesla is not the only one critical of the strikes. Waiting lines at the chargers were up to 100 metres long in some areas, users reported. “As forecasted, Swedish EV drivers are suffering and EV infrastructure is not keeping up unless Superchargers get energized by the utilities blocking them from getting energized. Tesla Superchargers are critical infrastructure, especially for peak travel days like this,” said de Zegher on X, referring to the many travellers headed back after the Christmas and New Year’s break. “Waiting in line like this is super painful, hurts EV adoption and totally fixable!”
When and if the conflict can be solved remains to be seen.
