VW’s electric sales decline slightly

The VW brand delivered around 383,100 fully electric vehicles worldwide in 2024, 10,600 fewer than in 2023. 62,253 of these were registered in Germany alone - making VW the strongest electric brand there.

Last year, the VW brand delivered 393,700 electric cars from the ID. series, which corresponded to an increase of 21.1 per cent compared to 2022. The 383,100 all-electric deliveries in 2024 thus represent a decline of 2.7 per cent.

However, 2024 was not a strong year for the VW brand in general, as deliveries across all drive types also fell by 1.4 per cent – to around 4.8 million vehicles. “Around the globe, 2024 was a difficult year with sluggish economic activity, political challenges and intense competition – particularly in China. Yet, we are beginning the new year with optimism,” says Martin Sander, VW Board Member for Sales, Marketing and After Sales. “Not only do we have attractive products, but we are meeting the needs of a wide variety of customer groups with our extensive, diverse model range that covers all drive types.”

Sander also attributes this to the growing range of electric cars. Since the launch of the ID. family in 2019, VW has sold a total of over 1.35 million of these electric vehicles worldwide, including around 500,000 ID.3s. The brand does not break down BEV sales by model and market in the press release – that will follow in the Group’s detailed announcement on 2024 deliveries.

In Germany, VW achieved a good result as a brand for electric cars: 16.3 per cent of all new electric car registrations in this country had a VW logo (+2.8 percentage points compared to 2023). In the statistics of the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), all of VW’s MEB models made it into the top 6: the ID.4/ID.5 (the KBA does not differentiate here) came in third place with 21,611 units in Germany in 2024, directly followed by the ID.3 with 20,101 new registrations. Its sister model, the Cupra Born, came in between the ID.3 with 16,640 units and the ID.7 (incl. Tourer), which took sixth place with 14,554 new registrations. An MEB model, the Skoda Enyaq, also came in second place ahead of the ID.4 (25,262 vehicles), but none of the VW models came close to the 29,896 Tesla Model Ys.
