US battery recycler Redwood Materials announced a new research and development centre in San Francisco. This 15,000 square foot facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art lab space to support innovation across the battery ecosystem.

Once Redwood Materials has completed its new battery laboratory, the company plans to set up cathode production, as well as explore future product lines. As Redwood itself describes the plans: “With Battery Materials Campuses underway in Nevada and South Carolina, and production scaling rapidly, our next chapter is focused on deepening technical innovation to support this growth.”

The choice to build the facility in San Francisco was cited as due to having “world-class engineering and technical talent,” and will see “dozens of roles” filled in its workforce, primarily across the fields of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. Last year, Redwood Materials announced that it had achieved a breakthrough in energy and water consumption while recycling, as well as a reduction in CO2 produced. In the new press release, Redwood specifies that it currently recovers over 95% of critical minerals in its recycling process.

Redwood writes that it recycled over 20 GWh of lithium-ion batteries last year. The company was initially launched by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel, a company with which Redwood Materials still maintains ties. However, Redwood has added several major automobile manufacturers to its customer list, including BMW signing on most recently, the General Motors subsidiary Ultium Cells, as well as Toyota. Even two-wheelers are represented with Rad Power Bikes.
