Solaris to deliver 81 electric buses to Stockholm

Solaris has received another significant order from Sweden. VR Sverige AB has placed an order for 81 Urbino 15 LE electric buses to be deployed in the Stockholm region. The vehicles will enter service Q2/2026, supporting Sweden’s ongoing transition to zero-emission public transport.

The three-axle, low-entry electric buses will operate in suburban areas of Stockholm under the management of VR Sverige AB, a subsidiary of the Finnish VR Group and one of Sweden’s leading public transport operators. Solaris notes that this is not the company’s first partnership with VR Sverige: the latest order builds on previous collaborations and further strengthens Solaris’ presence in the Swedish market.

The Urbino 15 LE electric model ordered for Stockholm is a three-axle vehicle designed specifically to meet the needs of suburban and regional routes. The 15-metre electric bus was first introduced in early 2020 and is designed especially for Scandinavian countries, as the demand there is high for that size vehicle. In other countries and regions, 12- and 18-metre versions are more common.

All 81 vehicles will be ‘will be homologated in Class II, meaning they will primarily operate on intercity and metropolitan routes,’ Solaris explains. As usual, the vehicles will be equipped with Solaris High Energy batteries, delivering a total capacity of over 550 kWh. The electric driveline is based on a central traction motor, in line with Solaris’ standard configuration for this model.

The vehicles will also be equipped with advanced comfort and safety features. Passengers can expect a fully air-conditioned interior, while the driver will benefit from Solaris’ Cabin Comfort Plus package, offering enhanced ergonomics and visibility, the manufacturer emphasises. The buses will also include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), CCTV, and a fire detection and suppression system in the drive unit area.

With this new order, Solaris is cementing its position as a major supplier of e-mobility solutions in Scandinavia. According to the manufacturer, more than 700 Solaris buses – over 300 of them battery-electric – are already operating on Swedish roads. Just last week, Solaris secured an order for 89 Urbino 15 LE electric from the Swedish transport operator Nobina.

“This order is a significant milestone for us,” said Olivier Michard, Solaris’ Management Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “We are proud to support the development of sustainable public transport in Sweden and to continue our cooperation with VR Sverige AB. Our Urbino 15 LE electric buses are perfectly suited for the demanding conditions of Nordic routes.”
