Electric vehicles have solidified their dominance in Denmark’s new car market. In the first half of 2025, 89,547 passenger cars were newly registered across all drive types, representing a 3.8 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. Of these, 57,171 were electric cars, marking an increase of almost 47 per cent year-on-year. This translates into a total EV market share of 63.8 per cent, up from 45 per cent in the first half of 2024.

Among private users, the preference for battery-electric cars was even stronger. More than 80 per cent of new passenger cars registered privately between January and June were electric, with the figure reaching almost 86 per cent in June alone.

“There was a high demand for electric cars in 2024, and we can see that interest has only grown this year, especially among private individuals who have really embraced the electric car,” said Mads Rørvig, CEO of Mobility Denmark. “This is a development that brings Denmark closer to the climate goals, because electric cars do not emit CO2, and therefore it is also a development that we must protect.”

The CEO also called for political action to maintain momentum towards decarbonisation. “Politicians should look at how a new car taxation model can create a simpler system that will benefit everyone and permanently support the green transition,” Rørvig stated.

According to bilstatistik.dk data published by Mobility Denmark, the best-selling models in the first half of 2025 were the Skoda Elroq (4,782 units), Volkswagen ID.4 (4,161), and Tesla Model Y (3,101). Other high performers included the Volkswagen ID.3, Skoda Enyaq iV, and Toyota bZ4X, all of which are battery-electric vehicles, underlining the strong EV trend in Denmark’s passenger car market.
