Audi and Porsche EV drivers gain NACS adapters

Porsche and Audi drivers will soon be able to access Tesla's Supercharger network in North America, thanks to the release of new NACS adapters. This will begin with a 'soft launch' tomorrow, September 9.

Drivers of specified Audi e-tron and Porsche Taycan and Macan models will be eligible for the adapters, which provide access to more than 23,500 Tesla Superchargers across North America. The so-called ‘soft launch’ basically means users will be able to charge via the Tesla app to begin with, but charging will eventually become available on the Audi and Porsche apps further down the line.

It’s worth reiterating that this will not guarantee access for all models. Porsche states that the new 2026 Porsche Taycan and Macan EVs will include an NACS DC adapter free of charge, while existing 2025 Taycan customers and all Macan Electric owners will too be eligible for a free adapter. Porsche has also added that all 2026 Macan and Toucan electric models “have the necessary navigation functions” to detect the additional charging stations. However, people who own the 2024 Taycan or older must purchase the adapter for $185 MSRP via Porsche’s online store if they want to charge via NACS, meaning the perk will only apply to owners of Porsche’s more recent EVs. It’s worth noting that the new Audi and Porsche adapters are exclusively compatible with DC fast-charging stations and will not work with NACS-capable Level 1 or 2 AC chargers. This rules out home chargers or Tesla Destination Chargers.

The story with Audi is much the same: the adapter will be included with new purchases of the 2025 Q6 e-tron, the A6 Sportback e-tron, and the e-tron GT. But it’s not yet available to existing customers, and the Q4 e-tron is also excluded. Speaking on the matter, Audi wrote: “The Audi Q4 e-tron cannot currently use the Audi NACS DC charging adapter or the Tesla NACS Partner Supercharger network.” It has, however, been said that there will be ‘later announcements’ regarding Q4 e-tron compatibility.

It marks a late start for Volkswagen, which back in December 2023 announced it would begin installing NACS ports in new VW, Audi, Porsche and Scout EVs being sold in North America from 2025. The German firm said at the time that existing EVs would receive access to the Supercharger network via an adapter – a stage which has now been completed at the VW subsidiaries. However, Porsche and Audi have not mentioned anything about installing NACS ports into their vehicles in the current announcement. Meanwhile, many brands – including Ford, Honda, Kia, Hyundai and others – already rolled out NACS adapters for their EVs months ago.
