Ionna invests $250 million in Californian fast-charging network
This week, the first Ionna charging parks in California went online in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, San Jose and Westminster. The ‘Westminster Rechargery Beacon’ charging hub is also said to be ‘Ionna’s first flagship location.’
The joint venture plans to invest more than 250 million US dollars (around 216.75 million euros) in expanding the charging infrastructure in California over the next three years. Over 1,000 of the 4,000 charging points Ionna is planning in the USA are to be installed in California.
“This week’s expansion into California is a snapshot of the national momentum Ionna has built in under a year’s time,” says Seth Cutler, Ionna CEO. “‘Ionna Speed’ isn’t just about how quickly we grow, but also how we deliver, and the Ionna team consistently operates with a driver-first mentality to elevate the charging experience.”
The electric car charging joint venture says it wants to “ensure that California Rechargery stations open with a bang and that customers feel supported.” An ‘EV Education Program’ has been launched to inform new electric car drivers about the network of ‘Rechargeries’ being built and the general benefits of driving an electric car.
At the beginning of the year, Ionna announced that it would be integrating Hubject’s Plug&Charge ecosystem. Ionna says that while only five of the eight founding members have currently integrated Plug&Charge – including BMW, General Motors, Hyundai, Kia and Mercedes-Benz – the three other partners, Honda, Stellantis and Toyota, are expected to follow in early 2026, while Rivian and Ford have just announced that they will be joining too.
