Citroën commits to Formula E
Citroën has announced that it will continue its commitment to Formula E into the Gen4 era, starting with the 13th season. The current 12th season is being contested with the updated Gen3 race cars, while from the 2026/2027 season, the fourth generation of Formula E cars, featuring up to 600 kW of power, will be introduced.
The French Stellantis brand has only been competing in Formula E since this season, after previously being represented by the DS and Maserati brands. This transition was seamless, coinciding with Maserati’s withdrawal after three years. DS had developed the electric powertrain for the otherwise largely standardised race cars and acted as Stellantis’s A-team, while Maserati served as the customer team.
“At Citroën, innovation must serve real life. Formula E — and now GEN4 — is how we turn electric performance into everyday progress,” said Xavier Chardon, CEO of the Citroën brand. “Motorsport has always been part of our DNA. We are proud to be fully involved in this new chapter.”
Ahead of the first Formula E race of the current season on European soil, Stellantis initially announced the withdrawal of the DS brand and later confirmed Opel GSE as its internal successor. As in the past, the two Stellantis brands will share a common powertrain but will compete independently with their vehicles.
However, Citroën’s race at the Circuito del Jarama near Madrid did not go as planned: despite Nick Cassidy starting from pole position, he finished only 17th, while his teammate Jean-Éric Vergne also failed to score points, finishing 14th. Cassidy did, however, secure three points for his pole position.
