Stuttgart welcomes four electric bin lorries

Mercedes-Benz Trucks has handed over the first five of a total of ten eEconic vehicles to the Stuttgart waste management authority. The electric refuse vehicles are stationed at a newly established depot in Stuttgart-Wangen. According to the partners, the EVs are working well in Stuttgart despite the challenging topography.

Stuttgart’s five refuse trucks of the Mercedes-Benz eEconic 300 type, as standard for this model series, are equipped with approximately 300kWh of usable battery capacity. They feature a rear loader from Faun (‘Variopress’) with a volume of 21 cubic metres, as well as a Faun Skylift tipping mechanism. To power this quintet and the five additional electric units to follow, AWS – Stuttgart’s waste management organisation – has specifically designed its new operational site in Stuttgart-Wangen for the deployment of electric refuse collection vehicles.

The site at Gingener Straße 2 is equipped with nine ceiling-mounted truck charging units. Additionally, there are several passenger car charging stations and two DC fast-charging points. The charging infrastructure is further complemented by a large solar power system; according to Daimler Truck, the roofs of the new facility “host one of the largest photovoltaic systems installed on a municipal building in Stuttgart”.

Alongside the ten eEconic trucks, AWS has also procured ten Mercedes-Benz Econic models with diesel powertrains. Of the organisation’s total fleet of around 1,100 vehicles, approximately 120 refuse collection vehicles are currently in use across the city. Markus Töpfer, Managing Director of AWS, comments: “The electric refuse collection vehicles represent a major leap forward for Stuttgart. Despite the city’s challenging basin topography, the eEconic trucks have proven their performance. They support a climate-friendly, future-oriented waste management system while at the same time improving working conditions for our employees. Their quiet operation makes communication in the cab easier and reduces the physical strain of daily work.”
