Price-gouging: Some BMW dealers in the U.S. are apparently trying to take advantage of the high demand for the i3. While the electric car is not yet fully available or only after a long wait, dealers are asking higher prices or include optional extras as “standard.”

E-Motorcycle from Austria: Johann Hammerschmid is the inventor of the Johammer. His rather interestingly looking electric motorcycle has a 12.7 kWh battery getting its energy from 1,200 Panasonic cells. The first seven units have now been build and sold for 25,000 euros (34.500 dollars). For the start, 50 Johammer will be build a year while 300 would be necessary to make a profit.

March was a strong month with 4,578 EVs sold in the U.S., an increase of 38.5 per cent compared to the same month last year. A further 4,594 plug-ins (+23.5%) and 43,790 hybrid vehicles (+43.3%) add to the delightful mix.

Telefónica to connect Tesla: The mobile network provider and the Californian carmaker announced an agreement for M2M connectivity for the Model S. Telefonica and its partners from the M2M World Alliance will be able to provide services all over Europe. In Germany and UK, O2 will serve Tesla drivers.

A new electrolyte developed by the universities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Japan’s National Institute for Materials Science is said to lower charging times for li-ion batteries by one third and to increase the nominal standard cell voltage from 3 to 5 volts. The new electrolyte contains a high concentration of lithium ion.

Video tip: Viewers of the 60 Minutes show from CBS might have wondered about the sound the Model S suddenly was making. Sound engineers must have thought, that the car was simply to quiet and added some combustion engine sound. CBS apologised and has now deleted the artificial soundtrack. March 2014 EV sales.

In March, Nissan sold 2,507 Leafs in the U.S.; a 12 percent increase compared to the same time last year. It was its best March to date! That puts the Leaf at 5,184 units sold since the beginning of the year. The Chevrolet Volt was able to attract 1,478 buyers with the Prius Plug-In Hybrid following closely with 1,452 units.

Daimler to double production in China: The German carmaker plans to invest a total of four billion euros (5.5bn dollars) in its Chinese joint venture Beijing Benz (BBAC) with one billion being reserved for the expansion of local car and engine production alone until 2015.

BMW strengthened the China-German relations too when signing a declaration of intent with its Chinese partner Brilliance Automotive to continue and deepen the cooperation. Last year, the BMW-Brilliance JV sold 206,729 BMW vehicles, an increase of 28.5%.

405,000 EVs worldwide: According to the German research centre ZSW, the number of electric vehicles, including range extended EVs and plug-in hybrids, has doubled since last year. Leading EV nation is the U.S. with 174,000 vehicles followed by Japan with 68,000 and China with 45,000. Germany only took seventh place with 17,500 electric cars counted.

Americans are saving 45 million gallons of gasoline (170m litres) a year already by driving EVs and PHEVs, a report by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) says. Money-wise they are saving 100 million dollars in refuelling costs.

Model S easy to hack? Nitesh Dhanjani, a corporate security consultant, has published his findings on design flaws of Tesla’s security system. According to Dhanjani, the Model S could be located and unlocked remotely simply by cracking the six-character user password with traditional hacking techniques. Cheaper carbon fibre: German carbon specialist SGL expects prices to fall by up to 90% within the next few years due to reduced manufacturing costs. This would mean 30 euros (41 dollars) or less per kilo and could make carbon fibre reinforced parts an even more viable alternative for cars.

Walmart shows the future in form of its aerodynamic hybrid truck. Its trailer is entirely made out of carbon fibre. The whole vehicle has now been presented at the Mid America Trucking Show (MATS) in Kentucky, USA.

Low price Ampera: Vauxhall dealer Pentagon is offering GM’s electric car with range extender from 22,995 pounds (38,200 dollars). That is 10,000 pounds less than listed but already includes the 5,000 grant from the UK government. Interestingly, this puts the plug-in Ampera in the price range of the Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion starting at 21,270 pounds (35,300 dollars).

E-bike for traveller: The chainless e-bike Mando Footloose by Haller Meister made its retail debut at consumer electronics shop Capi at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam. The retailer wants to support sales with large-scale promotions. Luckily, home delivery will be available as e-bikes are not allowed on planes due to li-ion battery regulations.

Sales in Japan: Here are the numbers for the electric and hybrid vehicle sales in Japan of the year 2013: Toyota again came in first with sales of 1,280,235 units, accounting for about 83% of Japan’s hybrid and EV market. Honda on the other hand reported a decline on sales of 19%, whereas Mitsubishi was able to kick-off its Outlander plug-in with 20,026 units.

E-bike sales in Germany.

The sale of 410,000 e-bikes has saved the German bicycle market in 2013. While regular bike sales saw a drop of 5.5% down to 3.75m units, pedelecs continued to grow (+7.9%). With a record marketshare of 11%, pedal-assisted bicycles have become the third largest segment in Germany.

Operator Braunschweiger Verkehrs AG says, that so called Emil is the first inductively charged e-bus in scheduled service worldwide. It will serve on the highly frequented loop line M19. By 2015, Emil will be joined by more of his kind to serve the line with e-buses only. So far, two stops feature inductive charging developed by Bombardier and TU Braunschweig university.

German standard for Europe: The Type 2 (three-phase AC) connector has been officially named the standard for the European Union, reports German news agency dpa with reference to the EU council of ministers. The Type 2 connector, also known as Mennekes plug gets already used for a while in European-built cars such as the BMW i3, Renault Zoe, Volvo V60 PHEV or Smart electric drive. Even Tesla’s European version of the Model S comes with a Type 2 intlet.

Japanese H2 efforts: Honda and Toyota both aim for an annual production of 1,000 fuel cell vehicles by 2015. Millions for mobility: The Mobility Fund is a foundation by Toyota designed to support initiatives that address mobility issues worldwide. Programmes by non-profit organizations and research institutions can expect grants totalling 3 to 4.5 billion yen (29 to 39m dollar) annually. The Mobility Fund will be registered in Japan by August this year.

New electric bus: Greenpower Motor Company from Canada will present its lightweight EV350 with Siemens components at the end of April. The electric bus is said to have a range of 250 kilometres per charge. Greenpower has appointed StarPoint as one of its U.S. distributors.

More than 12,000 Model X reservations have already been made, estimates Black Sheep Planet blog which again relies on information from the Tesla Motors Club website. Considering the deposit that is mandatory to every Tesla reservation, the electric carmaker is expected to hold an interest-free total of 112,920,000 dollars from Model X reservations alone.

Two H2 standards: SAE has issued two technical standards: SAE J2601, “Fueling Protocols for Light Duty Gaseous Hydrogen Surface Vehicles”, and SAE J2799, “Hydrogen Surface Vehicle to Station Hardware and Software.” The standards were designed to harmonise hydrogen fuelling for both 35 MPa and 70 MPa pressures internationally.

Flywheel fuel savings: Volvo engineers report savings of up to 25% of fuel with their Flybrid KERS in operation at the rear axle of an S60. While the system will not go into production as it is, they said that after 2020 some sort of KERS would be “inevitable on production cars.”

Save the copper: Toyota has developed a copper-recycling process that reproduces copper with a purity of 99.96%. Part of the process is the crushing of a car’s wiring assembly and seperating the copper by examining differences in buoyancy and using magnets. Together with Yazaki, Toyota wants to increase recycled copper production to 1,000 tons per year.

Honda’s Smart Home produces more energy from renewable sources than it can use in a year and can thus power the included Fit EV easily. The model house stands on the West Village campus of the University of California, Davis and awaits its yet to be selected inhabitants shortly.

Cornelia Yzer, Berlin’s local minister for economics, is pushing electric transport in the German capital. The expansion of the current charging network of 400 stations to 1,600 is met by more than 150 e-mobility projects in the German capital. A Europe-wide call for proposals for the charging infrastructure might be an ideal for other cities.
