EU Commission lays out new truck and bus emission targets
The EU Commission’s expected draft legislation on emissions of heavy goods vehicles has arrived, requiring new trucks to cut emissions by 90% by 2040 and all new city buses to have zero emissions from 2030. Still, the draft falls slightly short of delivering a fully effective ban of ICE trucks.

EU not to phase out combustion trucks before 2040
Trucks with combustion engines will still be able to be registered in the EU after 2035. A possible phase-out would take place in 2040 at the earliest, according to an internal Commission document on the revision of CO2 fleet limits for heavy-duty vehicles.

EU combustion vehicle sales ban under fire
Germany’s uncertain position on the phasing out of internal combustion vehicles (ICE) in the EU from 2035 appears to embolden other governments to make their own demands. If Germany abstains in the EU Council of Ministers, countries could succeed in watering down the incoming regulation on transport decarbonisation.

Italy to ban sales of new ICEs in 2035
Italy’s government has decided to ban new passenger cars with combustion engines from 2035 in line with the EU Commission’s plans. For light commercial vehicles, this is to apply from 2040. This has now been decided by the Italian government’s Committee for the Ecological Transition (CITE).

Climate Group launches ZEV Pledge for government fleets
A number of national, regional, state and city governments in the US, Canada, Mexico and the UK have made a commitment to convert their fleets to zero-emission vehicles by 2040. This involves a total of 121,355 vehicles, almost a third of which are medium- or heavy-duty vehicles.

California requires all new buses to be electric by 2029
California on Friday became the first state to mandate a full shift to electric buses on public transit routes. Starting in 2029, mass transit agencies in California will only be allowed to buy buses that are fully electric under a rule adopted by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
