EV Metals to build processing complex in Saudi Arabia
The Australian battery materials company EV Metals Group has secured 127 hectares of land in Saudi Arabia to build a battery chemicals processing complex. Production of lithium hydroxide at the plant located in Yanbu Industrial City is scheduled to start in 2026.

Keliber to mine and refine lithium in Finland
Finnish mining and battery chemicals company Keliber is aiming to mine spodumene from an ore mine and build an adjacent lithium hydroxide refinery in Finland. Preliminary work for the construction of the refinery at Kokkola Industrial Park (KIP) is expected to start this year.

SK On to source lithium from Chile
South Korean battery cell manufacturer SK On has signed a lithium supply contract with Chilean supplier SQM. SK On will buy up to 57,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide from SQM over a five-year period starting in 2023.

Stellantis invests in Vulcan Energy Resources
Stellantis has invested €50 million in Vulcan Energy Resources and becomes the second-largest shareholder of the German-Australian lithium producer with an eight per cent stake. Vulcan and Stellantis have also extended their binding off-take agreement for lithium hydroxide by five to ten years.

The Swedish battery cell manufacturer Northvolt is setting up a 50:50 joint venture with Portugal’s energy company Galp. Under the direction of the joint venture Aurora, a lithium conversion plant will be built in Portugal. The future location of the plant is still under discussion.

Rock Tech to build lithium plant in Germany
Rock Tech Lithium announces the construction of a production plant for battery-grade lithium hydroxide in Guben, Brandenburg – 60 kilometres from Tesla’s plant in Grünheide. The plan is to produce around 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year there, or enough for around 500,000 electric cars.

BMW buys 540 million euros worth of lithium in Australia
The BMW Group has just concluded a supply contract with Ganfeng Lithium based in Jiangxi, China, with a forecast volume of €540M for the supply of lithium hydroxide for battery cells. The lithium will be extracted in Australia with deliveries to start next year.
