BYD’s sales of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles exceeded the 40,000 mark for the first time in June. PHEV sales in particular saw a sharp increase, which is likely to be related to the launch of corresponding vehicles.

BYD sold a total of 51,015 vehicles in June, including 20,016 BEVs and 100 PHEVs. While overall sales increased by 51 per cent compared to June 2020, the group recorded a 102 per cent increase in BEV sales and as much as a 536 per cent increase in PHEV sales. This trend was also evident in May.

The boom in demand for plug-in hybrids is probably related to the market launch of three vehicle models with BYD’s new PHEV drive DM-i on board. As reported, these are the Qin, the Song and the Tang, which are designated as Qin PLUS DM-i, Song PLUS DM-i and Tang DM-i respectively.

Other than that, the June statistics state that 97 per cent of BYD’s PHEV and BEV sales last month were passenger cars. Conversely, 3 per cent were probably commercial vehicles.

BYD announced only last week that the first model based on its new 800-volt architecture called ‘e-platform 3.0’ will be an electric compact car unveiled in April under the working title EA1. The production model will be called the Dolphin. However, it remains unclear when exactly the model will be launched on the market.

At the presentation during the Auto Shanghai, BYD promised enormous driving performance and range with regard to the platform – there is talk of more than 1,000 kilometres and a maximum acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in only 2.9 seconds. In addition, the ‘e-platform 3.0’ is supposed to enable fast charging with 800 volts.

I have told friends of mine not invest in a new internal combustion car reason being that the way things are developing in five years time there will be no market for them.
