GKN is developing 800 Volt systems for electric vehicles

GKN Automotive is accelerating its development of electric drives in response to the increasing global demand for EVs. These future systems, utilising and harnessing 800-Volt technologies, are already at advanced stages of development and being tested in real-world conditions, GKN says.

GKN Automotive states that their “global experts are now working with the world’s leading automotive manufacturers to make these advanced eDrive systems a production reality”. While it is unclear how much was and will be invested in the development efforts, the scale is larger than that of an internal development project, as the company points to their partnership with Jaguar, adding that the development was “accelerated further through a partnership with Jaguar Racing in the ultra-competitive Formula E series.”

“Global demand for EVs is accelerating fast, and now is the perfect time for GKN Automotive to underpin its leadership in eDrive systems through next-generation technologies,” said Liam Butterworth, CEO of GKN Automotive, before adding: “These high-tech 800V systems will create faster-charging cars with better battery range, improved driving performance and even greater efficiencies. As a result, GKN Automotive intends to continue delivering an increasingly electrified future.”
