Samsung establishes ‘PRiMX’ subsidiary for EV batteries

Samsung SDI is marketing its current and future batteries for electric vehicles, among others, under the new brand ‘PRiMX’. The brand registration for PRiMX has been completed in South Korea and Europe and is expected to be completed in the USA shortly.

‘PRiMX’ stands for “Prime Battery for Maximum Experience”, according to the company. All battery types that Samsung SDI currently offers and will develop in the future – from current prismatic cells and round cells to upcoming solid state batteries – will be offered under this brand.

“PRiMX is a battery brand that conveys Samsung SDI’s unique identity,” said Michael Son, executive vice president of Samsung SDI, according to the release. “We will develop the brand to reach the pinnacle of technology.”

The company further stated that it will strengthen quality control in its battery manufacturing. “Advanced defect detection algorithms and artificial intelligence” will also be used for these more stringent quality checks. More than 500 factors are to be analysed and taken into account throughout the entire manufacturing process.

Since the PRiMX batteries are to offer “outstanding performance” in addition to “absolute quality”, Samsung SDI says it is working on new materials, “including a cathode and silicon anode with a high nickel content”. However, the company did not provide further details.

Among South Korean battery cell manufacturers, Samsung SDI ranks third in the electric car battery market and sixth globally. According to Seoul-based market tracker SNE Research, Samsung SDI accounted for 4.5 per cent of the global EV battery market last year to the end of November, with sales growth of 60.7 per cent year-on-year.
