zepp.solutions to build fuel cell plant near Rotterdam

The Dutch fuel cell system developer and integrator zepp.solutions is receiving EU funding of around two million euros for the construction of a plant in the greater Rotterdam area, with which the company intends to increase its production to 1,000 fuel cell systems per year.

According to zepp.solutions, the new factory will produce its Y50 and X150 fuel cell modules. With the factory, zepp.solutions wants to strengthen its position in the growing European hydrogen sector. The construction project is also supported by the Greater Rijnmond Region, the Ministries of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK) and Social Affairs and Employment (SZW) as well as the municipalities. Added to this is the approximately two million euros from the European “Just Transition Fund”.

Specifically, the new plant should enable the company to increase its production to 1,000 FC systems per year. In the course of this, “about 100 sustainable jobs in the hydrogen sector” are also to be created in the region. A German supplier will also benefit from the expansion of system production in the Netherlands: In the Y50 module, zepp.solutions relies on the NM5-EVO fuel cell stack from EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies.

Current applications include the Rotterdam water taxi (Y50), excavators from Liebherr (also Y50) and a 67-metre-long inland waterway vessel. The first two trucks with fuel cell systems from zepp.solutions – the X150 is used here – are scheduled to hit the road this year.

“The zepp team is excited to increase our contribution to a climate-neutral Europe. Each of our systems ultimately replaces a polluting diesel engine resulting in a reduction of between 111 and 332 metric tons of CO2 per system annually,” calculates Jonas Brendelberger, co-founder of zepp.solutions. “Our fuel cell technology boasts an impressive power density, surpassing that of our closest competitor by a significant share. This heightened power density enables the integration of hydrogen technology into a wider range of heavy-duty applications.”
