The largest sum of £15 million will go to a consortium led by Nissan, which is dedicated to the development and advancement of technologies for the reuse, recycling and energy balancing of electric vehicle batteries. Further funding will go to JLR and electric drive specialists Yasa and Empel Systems.

JLR is receiving the second-largest sum with £9.94 million, and has been tasked with developing a next generation “EDU ‘toolkit’; a modular family of machines, inverters and transmissions for future vehicle platforms.”

The Yasa project is titled ‘Re-Gen’, and is designed to develop a dual inverter system for regenerative braking in BEVs, “enabling new vehicle designs with EV-specific, optimised electronics and safety systems.” It is receiving funding to the tune of £7.02 million.

The smallest sum is going to the project SCION, which stands for ‘Silicon Carbide Inverter with Optimised Nano-modules’. With a grant of £3.73 million, the project seeks to develop a silicon carbide power module for use in high-efficiency automotive inverters and DC-DC converters.

“We’re committed to building the electric vehicle supply chain in the UK. By investing in the capability and expertise in this country we will grow businesses and take decisive action towards creating zero tailpipe emission technology. Our latest R&D funding does just that,” said APC Chief Executive Officer Ian Constance.

“This is great news for our automotive sector. £72 million of funding will help reinforce the UK as a world leader in zero emissions vehicle technology and further cementing our place as the second largest automotive manufacturer in Europe,” added Minister for Industry and Economic Security Nusrat Ghani.
