Solaris to deliver nine articulated H2 buses to Frankfurt

Frankfurt public transport operator In-der-City-Bus (ICB) has ordered further fuel cell buses from Solaris. The new order comprises nine Urbino 18 Hydrogen articulated buses, which will be delivered in July 2025. Some 23 Solaris fuel cell buses are already on the road in the German city.

Solaris delivered the first 13 hydrogen buses to the Frankfurt bus operator about two years ago. These were Urbino 12 Hydrogen buses. Following a Europe-wide tender, the public transport provider placed an order for another ten Urbino 12 Hydrogens last year. And ICB also has five battery-electric Urbino 12 Electric buses in its fleet.

In-der-City-Bus has now placed another order with the Polish manufacturer. Solaris will supply nine Urbino 18 Hydrogen articulated buses. They will arrive in Frankfurt am Main next year. The buses will serve the M32 line. It runs from Westbahnhof through the city centre to Ostbahnhof and is used by a good 13,000 passengers on weekdays.

Solaris keeps the exact technical configuration of the Urbino 18 Hydrogen to a minimum in the brief press release. The hydrogen required to power the buses is stored in gaseous form in composite tanks mounted on the roof, which will meet “the highest safety standards.” The vehicles now been ordered will be supplied with hydrogen at the company’s own H2 refuelling station.

The German state of Hesse is funding the purchase of the FCEVs. ICB had received a corresponding funding notification totalling 2.3 million euros for the purchase of the nine H2 articulated buses. The funding comes from the “Procurement of electric buses for local public transport in Hesse” programme of the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport and Housing. The 13 H2 buses mentioned above and the depot’s own hydrogen filling station were already funded with around €2.4 million and €1.7 million from this programme in 2022.
