Shell transfers home & workplace charging business to 50five

Shell Recharge Solutions is handing over part of its business to an external provider: Dutch company 50five is to take over responsibility for Shell Recharge Solutions' home and workplace chargers - in a total of six markets, including Germany. As part of the transaction, Shell staff will also transfer to 50five.

Shell Recharge Solutions (SRS) announces that it has signed an agreement with 50five. The company is a Dutch charging solutions provider that will now take over the SBS business on private land (home and business chargers) in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium and Luxembourg. In all other markets, Shell Recharge Solutions will retain full responsibility, but will “continue to explore other potential external partnerships.”

The partners emphasise that there will be no interruption to products and services for existing customers and that the “integrated e-Mobility solutions for leasing companies and corporate fleets” will continue to be offered. Shell will also retain the service business relating to payment via Shell Card, charging on the move and fleet solutions. However, the separation of the business is to take place quickly: “Once the transaction is complete, 50five will begin the technical process of migrating Shell Recharge Solutions’ charge points to its business,” it says. Customers will be contacted directly and informed about further details of the takeover. As part of the reorganisation, Shell employees will also transfer to 50five.

With the reorganisation of Shell’s charging business, the former NewMotion business, a charging specialist acquired by Shell around six years ago, is being cut back. Shell first acquired NewMotion in the autumn of 2017 and then the US company Greenlots in early 2019. At the beginning of 2022, the company was renamed Shell Recharge Solutions in order to unite Shell’s international range of charging solutions under one corporate identity. The promise at the time: “enabling cleaner mobility – at home, at work and on the move.” NewMotion primarily contributed its experience in home charging solutions and roaming services, while Greenlots contributed its expertise in charging networks and fleet services.

Shell now wants to move away from the installation and operation of charging points on private property in the six markets mentioned above. Xifeng Wu, Senior Vice president of Mobility Network and E-Mobility at Shell, commented: “We’re delighted to collaborate with 50five, who has a proven track-record on delivering excellent customer service for home and workplace charging. We are looking forward to working with 50five, while we continue to focus on providing better public charging experiences at locations such as our retail stations, on public roads, and at destinations. E-mobility is a crucial growth area for Shell; we already have around 70,000 public charge points today, with continued global investments planned for the coming years.” E-mobility is a key growth area for Shell, said Wu.

According to Manfred Klumpenaar, CEO of the 50five Group, the integration of the charging stations installed by Shell Recharge Solutions enables his company to further expand its role as a leading operator of charging stations in Europe. “Our mission has always been to provide high quality services to our customers, wherever and whenever they are needed. We look forward to welcoming our new colleagues and customers, and to working together on expanding our European EV charging network.”

50five was founded in 2016, is headquartered in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and acts as a Charge Point Operator (CPO). The company offers integrated e-mobility solutions including energy management, energy storage and charging-as-a-service.
