Ballard has announced its fuel cell systems will be deployed in New Flyer’s Xcelsior Charge FC hydrogen fuel cell buses across North America, with deliveries scheduled to begin this year. The order includes the FCmove-HD+ fuel cell module, with each unit delivering 100 kW and weighing approximately 250 kilogrammes.

The partnership between the two companies has spanned more than a decade. The current framework agreement dates back to January 2024 and was officially signed between Ballard and NFI, the parent company of New Flyer. NFI also owns brands such as Alexander Dennis and MCI, which may also order fuel cells from Ballard under the contract, although the current order is exclusively for New Flyer.

This represents the largest order placed under the framework agreement to date. The initial order in January 2024 comprised 100 modules, while in November 2024, New Flyer commissioned 200 modules for delivery in 2025. These modules have now likely been installed in customer vehicles, prompting the next, even larger order to be placed with Ballard.

“We are proud that New Flyer continues to place their trust in Ballard as their long‑term technology partner, building on a relationship that spans more than a decade,” says Oben Uluc, Vice President for Marketing and Sales at Ballard. “Our fuel cell engines, backed by additional fleet services, deliver the range, rapid refuelling, and reliable performance New Flyer’s fleets require. With Ballard technology at the core of these vehicles, New Flyer is well-positioned to accelerate zero‑emission deployments across North America.”

“This agreement is the next step in our long-standing partnership with Ballard and a key component in advancing our leading fuel cell bus offerings,” said David White, Executive Vice President, Supply Management, New Flyer. “Over the last decade, we’ve delivered buses powered by Ballard in multiple jurisdictions from coast to coast, showing their capability to operate in different environments and routes as a 1-for-1 diesel replacement. With growing demand for fuel cell buses, we are excited to continue this partnership as we support the transition to zero-emission transportation.”

Congratulations Ballard! So nice to hear evidence of acknowledgement of the fine product that Ballard produces and more, of a purchase that moves beyond lip-service to incorporation!
