BorgWarner has announced it is to supply its electric and hybrid drivetrains to three Chinese automotive players, among them Great Wall and its EV brand ORA. The other two OEMs have not been named so far yet overall the deal is huge for BorgWarner.

Yet, the company seeking to further improve battery performance, signed battery researcher Jeff Dahn, who just presented his newest findings: By improving the chemistry of NMC Li-ion, the cells shall be able to keep 95 percent of their original capacity after no less than 1,200 charging cycles (about 480,000km).

Electric world climb record: Siemens’ plane Extra 330LE set a new record for time to climb, reaching a 3,000 metre altitude in just four minutes and 22 seconds. The plane’s electric drivetrain weighs just 50 kilos and has an output of 260 kW. Siemens expects first electrically powered passenger airplanes with a range of up to 1,000 km to take over the sky from 2030.

All in one: BorgWarner has presented its first electric drivetrain unit with integrated eGearDrive. It will be used in two models of an unnamed Chinese manufacturer from next summer. Li-ion research in Germany: The research production plant for Li-ion batteries at the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research in Ulm, Germany, has been inaugurated. A first joint project by the German Ministry for Education and partners including BMW, Bosch, Daimler, SGL Carbon and Siemens will kick off in January. The initiative is funded by the state of Germany with 25.7 million euros and 6 million euros by the federal state of Baden-Württemberg.
