Lion Smart to develop electric bus battery

Lion Smart has been awarded a contract by Grande West Transportation Group of Canada to provide engineering services for development and integration. Lion Smart is helping with the electrification of the Vicinity bus model. The value of the order is in the mid-six-figure euro range.

The Canadian manufacturer is hiring battery specialist Lion Smart to test the integrability of battery pack solutions in its Vicinity bus model, which is currently only available in versions with combustion or CNG drive. The contract specifies tasks for Lion Smart in detail in the areas of software, mechanical and electrical adaptation and the integration of several 400-volt battery packs from the BMW i3 into a demonstrator bus model.

Grande West Transportation, based in Aldergrove, British Columbia, specialises in mid-sized commercial vehicles for public and private companies. The electrically driven version Vicinity LT EV will be available in the 2021 bus model mentioned above. Once the development services have been completed, Lion Smart can look forward to possible follow-up orders for the Vicinity LT EV in the coming year.

“We are happy about the development contract from Grande West Transportation and the acquisition of another customer in North America,” says Thomas Hetmann, Managing Director of Lion Smart GmbH. “Integration work and its following series business represents a lucrative and scalable business model. This contract shows that our services as a specialist for engineering services are in demand and that other customers are also interested in our expertise in this area”.

The German company Lion Smart GmbH is a subsidiary of Lion E-Mobility AG, a listed Swiss holding company founded in 2011 and focusing on strategic investments in the field of electric mobility. As the Group’s developer of battery packs and battery management systems, Lion Smart’s product range includes an in-house developed modular light battery system. In principle, the company maintains close ties to BMW and realizes the integration of battery solutions for third parties based on batteries and modules of the BMW i3. Most recently, Lion Smart has adapted and certified its battery solutions for the maritime sector, among others.
