Volta Trucks receives European Type Approval for 16 tonner

Volta Trucks has received European Type Approval (ECWVTA) for its 16-tonne Volta Zero electric truck, reaching another important milestone on the road to the start of production.

With the award of the ECWVTA, Volta Trucks now has permission to go into series production and start sales with its all-electric Volta Zero. The certification comes just before the delivery launch of the second-generation prototypes of the pre-production Volta Zero to customers across Europe as part of a pilot fleet.

The first Volta Zero electric trucks individually mass-produced for customers are scheduled to roll off the production line at the contract manufacturing facility in Steyr, Austria, early in the second quarter of 2023. The first Volta Zero prototype was manufactured there in September 2022. Since the actual production vehicles are built to customer specifications, they may differ slightly from the validation vehicles. The largest customers are DB Schenker, with just under 1,500 units on order and Petit Forestier with over 1,000 Volta Zero trucks.

On-street tests are already underway, for example, with the logistics company DB Schenker, who received a prototype about a week ago, in preparation for their order of 150 vehicles to be delivered by the end of this year. The first 300 production slots for the electric truck have also been allocated.

“Receiving the European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval is a huge milestone for Volta Trucks, and our mission to make city centre streets safer and more sustainable for all, said Essa Al-Saleh, Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks, adding: “We’ve developed a completely new vehicle from the ground up, and it’s a testament to our Engineering and Developments teams that the Volta Zero has passed these stringent and demanding tests so quickly.”
