Hyundai orders more motor cores from Posco

South Korea's principal steel group has received another major order from Hyundai to supply stators and rotors for motor cores. The Posco components will help power mainly electric cars built in the European plants of Hyundai and Kia.

According to Korean media, the distribution is already set. Posco will supply 1.03 million units to Hyundai Mobis in Slovakia between 2025 and 2034. The motor cores will be installed in the drive units at the Hyundai-owned supplier’s factory. The Slovakian plant of Hyundai Mobis is located in Zilina near Kia’s vehicle plant.

The latter will receive around 480,000 drives with Posco motor cores. The remaining 550,000 units will be sent to the group’s plant in Turkey. The Hyundai Assan Otomotive plant in Izmit mainly produces small cars and the electric version of the Hyundai Kona with a small battery. The Kona Elektro with the larger battery comes from the Czech plant in Nosocive, which is not mentioned in the reports on the Posco deal.

The company said the new contract greatly boosts its upcoming Polish production site. Posco plans to produce electric motor cores in a new plant in Poland, with construction due to start in the first half of this year and be completed in 2025. The location is in Brzezce in southern Poland, around 120 kilometres north of Zilina. It is considered strategically advantageous thanks to its proximity of OEMs in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and other European countries.

This is not the first order for electric motor cores from Hyundai for Posco: the Korean manufacturer reportedly ordered almost twelve million motor cores in the past 15 months, most recently in September 2023, when Hyundai ordered 3.5 million units for the new electric car plant in the USA and South Korean production facilities.

The South Korean steel group aims to produce at least five and potentially seven million motor cores annually by 2030 at its most important production sites outside South Korea, specifically in China, Mexico, Poland and India.

Another arm of the Posco Group – Posco Chemical – is reportedly active in cathode material production for EV batteries. Posco is also increasing its capacity in battery recycling.
