Lucid Gravity uses 2170 cells from Panasonic

For its second Gravity model, Lucid Motors uses the latest generation of 2170 battery cells from Panasonic Energy, which achieve an energy density of over 800 Wh/l. These cells were developed in close cooperation between the two companies.

The Lucid Gravity is a large electric SUV built at Lucid’s main factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, since last December. The second model series after the Air electric saloon has been available to order in the US since November – with prices starting at 79,900 dollars.

It has been clear since December 2022 that the Gravity will use battery cells from Panasonic. At that time, Lucid Motors had signed a corresponding supply contract for battery cells with Panasonic Energy – the cylindrical cells were initially supplied by LGES. The Panasonic cells were also integrated into the Lucid Air Pure. The companies’ announcements did not clarify how exactly the Panasonic cells were adapted to Lucid’s requirements. Lucid relies on a 900-volt system to achieve high discharging and charging performance.

In the latest press release, Lucid emphasises that the battery pack in the Gravtiy is up to 40 per cent smaller than that of the competition due to the high energy density of the cells – however, the exact dimensions or energy content are still not specified. Given the estimated EPA range of 450 miles (724 kilometres) and the Lucid Air (92 or 112 kWh), it is considered likely in the industry that the Gravity uses the 112 kWh pack from Lucid – or a further development of it adapted to the Panasonic cells.

Currently, the 2170 cells for Lucid still come from a Panasonic factory in Japan. As soon as the new US plant in De Soto, Kansas, is up and running, Lucid will also be supplied with cells from US production.

“By combining our high-performance, high-energy density cells with Lucid’s technology, we have been able to utilise the unique characteristics of our cylindrical cells, resulting in a SUV with unparalleled performance and range,” said Kazuo Tadanobu, CEO of Panasonic Energy. “This underscores our continued efforts in aiming to set new standards in the EV industry and contributing to a sustainable society.”
