BYD & Hino to cooperate on electric utility vehicles

BYD and Toyota’s commercial vehicle subsidiary Hino Motors have signed a strategic cooperation agreement in the field of electric vehicles. The agreement initially provides for the joint development of BEV commercial vehicles and will later extend to other areas such as sales.

GM CEO Mary Barra has not yet resorted to simply accepting the EV sales quota but calls on Chinese officials instead to consider whether there is sufficient demand for electric cars before they move to ban gasoline and diesel engines.

“We are far beyond our expectations. It’s been like a snowball gathering momentum.”

Alejandro Agag, head of the Formula E, has been surprised himself by how quickly the electric racing series has taken up speed given it was only first discussed in 2012.

Renault takes the lead in the electrification strategy of the Alliance with Mitsubishi and Nissan as 8 out of 12 EV planned will come from the French by 2022. Renault’s Drive the Future plan in fact outlines 20 electrified models due within the next five years, including said eight all-electric cars. During the same period, the Group also wants to cut its diesel offering by 50 percent and reduce it to one family from currently three diesel engines. In terms of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, they will share a dedicated EV platform across the B to D segments with a first electric SUV coming first to China before spreading to other markets.

Volvo got ready for pole position as it circulates a piece of the puzzle that is to reveal its first electric car under the Polestar label. The Swedes only recently turned their performance division into an all-electric brand and now want to make a grand entry on October, 17. While the image is literally missing a few pieces, Autocar imagines a coupé bearing a 600 hp plug-in hybrid drive.

China’s EV quota comes in 2019: Now it is official – China will impose new sales targets for EVs and HEVs by 2019, one year later than originally planned. But the quota level starts then straightaway with 10 percent, rising to 12 percent by 2020. Thus, the government simply removes the 8 percent quota for 2018, but otherwise sticks to its earlier plans. The new rule applies to carmakers that manufacture more than 30,000 traditional vehicles annually. Those who do not reach the 10 percent sales of so called new-energy vehicles must buy credits or face fines.

Audi to build EVs worldwide: The VW-owned carmaker wants to expand EV production to all of its factories, according to CEO Rupert Stadler. In future, electric cars won’t just roll off the lines in Brussels, Neckarsulm and Audi’s headquarters in Ingolstadt, but also in Hungary and Mexico. The Germans intend to roll out more than 20 electrified cars before 2025, among them a dozen powered by a battery only. The company’s first two mass-produced EVs – the e-tron EV and the e-tron Sportback – will be manufactured in Brussels by 2018 respectively by 2019.

Japanese EV alliance: Toyota and Mazda team up with Toyota’s supplier Denso to found a JV called EV Common Architecture Spirit. New Panamera PHEV: Porsche presented the next generation of its Panamera Turbo. Two hybrid variants are apparently planned, although the German luxury brand has not released details on the plug-ins yet. The Panamera will hit the stores this November.

Energetic partnership: BYD and utility Enel agreed to work together on global projects for electric buses and energy storage. The partners aim their transport services, which will be based on batteries by BYD, particularly at municipalities in areas they already operate in.

Diesel deal details: Of the 2bn dollars Volkswagen is to reserve for electric transport initiatives, 800m will go to California to finance EV charging infrastructure, hydrogen stations, electric carsharing programmes and other schemes. Chinese PHEV SUV: Great Wall’s SUV brand Haval has shown the HB-02, a concept SUV with plug-in hybrid technology in Beijing. Range is given at 65 kilometres with the electric motor developing 95 kW powered by a 13 kWh Li-ion battery. The drive will feature in Haval production vehicles from next year.

BYD-eBus-K9Production start: BYD has kicked off production at its newest facility in Chinese Qingdao. There, the manufacturer will build 1,000 electric buses per year and is said to increase production output to annually 5,000 units in the future.

Bentley Barnato: Bentley’s upcoming EXP 10 Speed 6-based sports car is set to arrive in 2019. The car, expected to be named the Bentley Barnato, could also be offered as a pure electric version.

Honda CR-Z dead: Honda is killing their hybrid CR-Z, in order to “significantly expand its sales of electrified vehicles” by focusing on the 2017 Accord Hybrid and the Clarity range. As reported, the Clarity will be available as a fuel cell, electric and plug-in hybrid variant.

German premiums approved: The EU Commission has confirmed Germany’s planned premiums for EVs as a permissible subsidy. German EV and PHEV buyers can now apply for 4,000 and 3,000 euros in funding, retrospectively. The programme, put in place retroactively from Mai 18th, will continue until 2019 or until the earmarked 600m euros are spend – whichever comes first.

Romeo rivals BMW: Auto Express snapped some images exclusive images of Alfa Romeo’s MBW 5 series rival. The new model will also be available as a plug-in hybrid that should hit the market in 2018.

Solar-powered Prius: The next generation Toyota Prius PHEV can be recharged with a built-in rooftop solar panel, at least in Japan and in Europe, as the current model does not pass U.S. safety regulations yet. Opel-Ampera-e-300Bolt Opel: It is official, GM will launch the Chevy Bolt as Opel/Vauxhall Ampera-e in Europe next year, CEO Mary Barra confirmed. The date for its debut will most likely be in Paris this October. If all goes to plan, this could be a huge chance for Opel/Vauxhall to gain chunks of the EV market as no other electric car offers 320 km range for less money.

Tesla update: Elon Musk promised shareholder that the company would be profitable in 2016 to (we reported), despite considerate investments in the Gigafactory (1.5bn USD), Supercharger network (+300 sites) and stores (+80). Model 3 development and production are another cost factor and Tesla looks to sell premium trims first to recover some if the initial investment. With the Model 3 launch set for 31st March this year, deliveries will still only start by the end of 2017.

Kia Niro premiers: The Koreans show a serial version of their first dedicated hybrid at the Chicago Auto Show. The Kia Niro SUV, or ‘Hybrid Utility Vehicle’ (HUV) sits on a platform specifically designed for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles from Hyundai. A PHEV version is reportedly scheduled for next year.

New Toyota Hybrid: The Japanese carmaker readies the promised production version of its C-HR concept for Geneva in March. BYD for DHL: In Chinese Shenzhen, DHL uses 35 electric vans by BYD for its package deliveries. The T3 with its 200 km range is the start of a “strategic cooperation” between the two firms. Meanwhile BYD has readied two more electric delivery vans, the T5 and T7, that both offer more room for load.

Gogoro OPEN Initiative: The electric scooter sharing system from Taiwan says it found 200 cities from 50 countries ready to install mini Gogoro chargers. The initiative is designed to establish interest and ultimately extend the scope of the firm’s electric mobility offering.

Yamaha unveils electric concepts: Yamaha has revealed a series of new concepts which will debut at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month. On the electric side, there’s going to be the PES2 sportbike and the PED2 dirt bike as well as the YPJ-MTB, an electrically assisted mountain bike. Yamaha also announced a new concept car, but there is no word yet on whether it will feature an electric drivetrain.

Mirai offspring on the way? The Toyota Mirai could be just the start of a whole fuel cell vehicle family, according to chief engineer Yoshikazu Tanaka. Autocar reports there are already plans for estate, hatchback, MPV and SUV models with Mirai technology in Toyota’s drawer. In the U.S., Toyota already received some 1,900 order requests for the Mirai within only two months after its launch.

Tesla Q3 outlook: Tesla has delivered 11,580 vehicles in the third quarter of 2015, including the first Model X handovers. That’s around the same number as that of the second quarter, but 49 percent up from the same period last year. First look at BYD’s upcoming hybrid SUVs: The BYD Yuan will be powered by a 1.3-liter four cylinder, as well as two electric motors. The Song will even be offered as a pure-EV by 2016. The hybrid variant scheduled for 2015 will feature a 1.5-liter turbo four cylinder engine and two electric motors.

e-Quattro in the making: According to the magazine Car, this year’s Audi A4 and 2017 TTQ could be fitted with an AWD e-quattro system. They hybrid drivetrain consists of one combustion engine and two electric motors with a combined output of up to 408 hp in high-performance versions. Moreover, the report mentions that the TTQ could be offered with wireless inductive charging.

Tesla fighter from China: The state-owned Chinese carmaker BAIC wants to introduce an all-electric premium car next year that has a range of up to 400 km to compete with Tesla’s Model S sedan. No further details have been announced yet.

Volt called back: An unknown number of Chevy Volt built between 2011 and 2014 are recalled due to faulty rear liftgate struts. Whether the callback also concerns the Opel Ampera is not known at this time.

Used hybrids for Nepal: The Japanese company BP Trading wants to sell reconditioned hybrid vehicles in Nepal. However, so far the country does not allow the import of used cars at all. But in the wake of new policies pushing for lower emission cars, it might reconsider.

Electric lorry by BYD: Spyshots showing the BYD T5 are circulating in the world wide web. The all-electric T5 is said to have a range of 400 kilometres and apparently, the Chinese company plans to issue a smaller version called T3 as well as a bigger model, the T7 in due time.

A new Roadster by 2017? Auto Bild’s Hauke Schrieber is quoting Tesla’s chief designer Franz von Holzhausen who said the company is planning a Model R. The new car would sit on the Model 3 platform and be designed to “show what Tesla is capable of,” according to Holzhausen.

Camry service campaign: Toyota is calling 177,000 Camry Hybrids back into the workshops in what the company calls a “service campaign.” The recall, as Consumer Reports prefers to name it, is due to an issue with the brake fluid which can lead to a failure of the brakes’ power assist system.

Mahindra quick charging: The Indian manufacturer now offers quick charging for its E2O with a feature called Quick2Charge. If the new variant comes to market, the E2O will cost 45,000 rupees (about 735 dollars) more in India. The export version will have Quick2Charge as standard.

One more from BYD: The Chinese manufacturer will debut the Tang PHEV at its home fair. The Tang features the same 110 kW motor that works inside the Qin. A 205-hp petrol engine completes the hybrid mix. The price of the plug-in SUV is said to convert to 48,000 dollars.

Volvo-S60L-PPHEVVolvo Plug-in hybrid S60: Volvo will show the S60 PPHEV (Petrol Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) concept at the Auto China in Beijing. Like on the V60 PHEV, the electric motor has 50 kW but is coupled with a petrol instead of the diesel engine. The S60L will be produced at the Chengdu plant and is set to launch in China beginning of next year.

tesla-chinaTesla goes China: Veronica Wu, vice president of Tesla in China, told Reuters in an interview about Tesla’s big plans for China. Tesla aims to open shops in 10-12 Chinese cities by the end of this year. By 2015 the production for China could be on level with the number of cars made for the U.S. and eventually requiring a local plant, Elon Musk said. Thanks to a recent court decision, the electric carmaker now owns the rights to operate under its name “Te Si La”.

German EV incentives: Minister for transport, Alexander Dobrindt, announced plans for a new law to promote the advent of EVs in Germany. BYD electric van: What almost looks like Nissan’s NV200, is the latest van from BYD. More ‘waku-doki’: By order of Toyota’s president, Akio Toyoda, the next models of the Camry and Prius will get a more “heart-racing” design. Engineers and designers are trying to realise a “more emotional, more impactful design,” without jeopardising the market leaderships of the two models.
