Borgward brings coupé: It is one of the sweeter surprises at this year’s IAA, the all-electric Isabella by Borgward. While the revived brand had mainly SUV plans, it draws from its history for this concept that comes in a modernised and sleek form. The e-Isabella bears two electric motors with a combined 220 kW. While Borgward speaks of 500 km range, it is unclear whether this racy four-door EV will ever see a production facility from the inside.

Wishful thinking: Since the power of emission regulation has dawned on the car industry, it has switched to a preemptive strategy. Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, who currently leads the ACEA as well, now made an “offer” to reduce emissions by another 20 percent between 2021 – 2030 – if demand for EVs and infrastructure allows. The German Ministry for the Environment in a first reaction pointed out that such decisions belong to the realm of politics.

Chery’s plug-in SUV is out officially as the Chinese unveil the Exeed TX at the IAA. In Europe it will go on sale in all three electrified variants, EV, PHEV, and hybrid reportedly. The plug-in hybrid will be first and then come with a range of 70 kilometres.

Audi-Q6-etron300x150Audi opens order books in Norway: The German carmaker surprises with the announcement to accept pre-orders for its electric SUV in Europe’s leading EV market. The e-Audi will roll off the lines from next year on. Norwegians who want to get registered for purchasing the EV have to pay 20,000 Norwegian Krones (2,150 euros) in advance, however in case of cancellation this down payment will be given back. It remains to be seen if this strategy to start in Norway will work for Audi as it did for GM with the Opel Ampera-e or Tesla.

30m euros for Rimac: Chinese battery manufacturer Camel Group will invest a total of 30m euros in the Croatian EV maker – 27m euros to boost the electric car business and 3m to promote Rimac’s electric bicycle unit Greyp Bikes. Camel and Rimac signed a framework agreement a few days ago but the Croatians are still in the process of collecting further offers of investment.

Yudo concept with wing doors: Shanghai’s Motor Show sees the third model created by China’s new EV brand Yudo. After the Pi 1 and Pi 3 the company unveiled its X-Pi, a concept car with wing doors that gives an outlook on how the fully electrified crossover planned for 2019 will look like. Yudo has a production licence for China and wants to open 110 dealerships still this year.

E-mobility investment: Several firms, among them EDF and Forsee Power, have founded NEoT Capital, an investment company specialised in electric mobility and renewable energies. The company intends to launch an investment programme called NEoT Green Mobility in the second quarter of 2017 and thus raise several hundred million euros to promote electric mobility within the next five years.

Ukraine to remove taxes: The Ukrainian government intends to eliminate VAT and excise duties on the import of EVs, their components and charging stations from now until January 2023.

As the Dark Knight has finished rising, its fat Batpod motorcycle is to be auctioned. Six of them were made and all show signs of wear and tear from all the action. A support stand for display is included as the bikes will be sold in a “rolling only” condition. A challenge for retro-fitters?!

Range anxiety irrational: 87 percent of cars currently on the road could be replaced with electric cars available today. This is the result of a study by MIT and the Santa Fe Institute that analysed driving patterns and even factored in ambient temperature and fuel economy. It based the analysis on a modestly priced Nissan Leaf that would be charged over night.

Borgward buys expertise: The revived brand has hired Dr. Tilo Schweers as Chief Developer for Alternative Drive Systems. He studied at RWTH Aachen and worked for Daimler previously. Florian Herbold is to work alongside him as Chief Engineer for Transmission Development and Integration.

ABS for e-bikes: Initially developed for a Volkswagen e-bike, BrakeForceOne launches its ABS for pedelecs at the Eurobike. The system is based on a algorithm and sensors, which detect if one of the wheels is locked or lifted up. It then assures safe deceleration.

E-bike mate: Danish start-up Mate.bike is about to launch its crowdfunding campaign for its folding pedelec. Three versions are based on different battery sizes and the cheapest model would start at 599 dollars. In the U.S., the 250 W motor will be allowed to hit 20 mph but is restricted to 25 kph in Europe.

Tesla breaks records: Worldwide, some 276,000 reservations for the Model 3 had been made by Saturday evening. This goes to show that demand for an affordable EV with long range is high. New hybrid supercars planned: BMW and Lexus are rumored to be collaborating on a successor of the Lexus LFA. Motoring reports that a prototype already exists and that the BMW version will be powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, while the Lexus supercar will feature a detuned version of the hybrid drivetrain from the TS040 race car with roughly 800 hp. Meanwhile, Autoblog writes that Mercedes-AMG is reportedly developing a hybrid supercar with a 12-cylinder mated to an electric motor.

Taiwanese Tesla-fighter: Thunder Power published a teaser photo of its electric car, which it will premiere in Frankfurt. The Taiwanese company promises over 370 miles of range, the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in under five seconds, 316 kW under the hood and a maximum speed of 155 mph. The EV is expected to arrive in Europe in 2017, with a price tag of 400,000 yuan (63,000 USD).

Borgward BX7 SUV: Borgward released first official photos of and details about its upcoming compact SUV, scheduled for launch at the IAA (we reported). The plug-in hybrid version will boast 401 hp and can drive 34 miles fully electrically. VW camper e-van: Volkswagen will present its all-electric Microbus camper concept at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. The production version is expected to be smaller than the current Volkswagen Multivan and to have a range of 250 to 310 miles. The vehicle will be produced in Mexico from 2017.

New four-door CLC: Mercedes will launch a new edition of the CLC in 2020, according to Auto Bild. The CLC II will be a four-door limousine, instead of the current two-door sports coupé, and the line-up will include two AMG models with hybrid options. An early version of the CLC 450 Sport plug-in is said to offer 90 kW of electric power, which will later be upgraded to 115 kW.

Test driving the Mirai: As the Toyota fuel cell car arrives in North America and Europe, Stephen Noctor from Transport Evolved got behind the wheel. He was disappointed to find that it “lacked the instant torque” he knows from electric cars, saying it accelerated slower than the 2015 Corolla. Noctor was also not a fan of the noise, as the fuel cell car was louder than any EV.

VW-eUp-ComboVW’s electric plans: According to German Autozeitung, the new VW Polo, announced for March 2017, will also be available as a purely electric variant. The new VW Phaeton will follow in June 2017, including a plug-in hybrid version. The Phaeton W12, however, will only be offered as a mild-hybrid. Due to recuperation technology, the car will be eight percent more fuel efficient than its predecessor.
