Fortum invests in new battery recyling plant in Finland

Fortum will expand its lithium-ion battery recycling capacity by building a new plant in Harjavalta, Finland. The new plant, which will cost Fortum about 24 million euros, will recycle rare metals and other materials from old EV batteries using hydrometallurgy.

Nornickel increases output in Finnish nickel refinery

The Russian mining company Norilsk Nickel – also known as Nornickel – wants to increase production at its nickel refinery in Harjavalta, Finland. Production should increase to 100,000 tonnes per year by 2026 due to the rising demand for battery materials, especially for electric vehicles.

Battery recycling cluster to open in Harjavalta

Fortum, BASF and Nornickel have signed a letter of intent to establish a battery recycling cluster to serve the electric vehicle market. The aim is to create a closed loop for the reuse of the critical metals contained in spent batteries.

BASF builds battery material factory in Finland

BASF has now officially selected Harjavalta in Finland as their first location to manufacture battery materials for the European automobile market. The facility will be built nearby the refinery belonging to Russian mining company Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel).
