Geely shows off new BEV & PHEV models for China

Geely presented a new SUV model based on the CMA platform at the Shanghai Auto Show. The Xingyue L will also get an electrified version later. There is also a new BEV version of the ‘Geometry A’ and a plug-in hybrid from Lynk & Co.

The new CMA model is unique because unlike many of the group’s other vehicles, the Xingyue L is to be launched under the Geely Auto brand. However, the manufacturer does not yet provide further details on the announced electrified version. As the brand’s flagship vehicle, the Xingyue L features 5G connectivity and also an unmanned parking assistant, which will help the vehicle to autonomously find a parking space and park within a radius of 200 metres without a driver.

A hint at the powertrain could be provided by the Volvo XC40 Recharge and Polestar 2 also on display at the Geely stand – i.e. a 78 kWh battery and 300 kW all-wheel drive. The recently presented front-wheel-drive variants of the Polestar 2 or even the plug-in hybrids from the Volvo SUV are also possible, as the announcement only mentions an “electrified powertrain”.

Geely’s Geometry brand also presented a new version of the battery-electric Geometry A at the show with an increased range of 600 kilometres (according to NEDC). The sedan, called Geometry A Pro, relies on an NCM523 battery; the energy content of the high-voltage storage unit is not mentioned in the announcement. Previously, CATL batteries with 51.9 and 61.9 kWh (for 410 and 500 NEDC kilometres respectively) were used. The electric motor has an output of 150 kW. The brand also announced that the Geometry C will be offered in selected markets outside China later this year.

Lynk & Co, also part of the Geely Group, showed a new PHEV version of the Lynk & Co 05. While the 05 is also based on the CMA, Lynk & Co plans to show a model based on the Scalable Product Architecture later this year. This is the platform on which the Volvo 60 and 90 series have been based since 2014.

While at the 2020 Auto China in Beijing, which was postponed to autumn due to the pandemic, the new Geely platform SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) was still presented in the form of a Lynk & Co model, Geely had already presented the new premium brand Zeekr in the run-up to this year’s trade fair in Shanghai. The Zeekr 001 is more or less the Lynk & Co 08 shown in 2020. The 001 is also exhibited on the stand in Shanghai.
