German battery factory: BMZ inaugurated two new buildings in German Karlstein-Großwelzheim. The production and logistic facilities are just one step of becoming Europe’s biggest battery maker. CEO Sven Bauer aims to make “up to 800m Li-ion batteries in different sizes with a total storage volume of around 40 GWh per year” by 2020. He stresses the importance of pedelec batteries for BMZ. Furthermore, the 20-year-old company is working on a super cell with a prototype set to debut this year.

Eakay expands: Chinese electric auto rental service Eakay concluded a successful two year trial in Wuhu and will open branches in 50 cities in the next two years. Cars can be rented via an app and dropped off at predetermined locations. Eakay intends to grow its fleet from 1,100 cars from locally-based Chery Automobile to 3,100 by the end of the year.

Six U.S. states (18 percent of the vehicles market) won’t currently allow Tesla stores, which could hurt sales of the new Model 3. Proterra tested: King County Metro Transit in Washington state, USA, has completed accelerated durability and reliability testing for the Proterra Catalyst e-bus. The highly rigorous test consisted of simulating continuous use with a 97 passenger sized load for one year. The Proterra averaged 325 miles per day, driving 572 miles/day max. The electric bus was charged over 1,750 times during the testing period.

The project’s second phase could see the construction of a V2G system.

Thailand’s three step plan: To push EV uptake in the public sector, the country will start regulating EV costs, making sure prices will not exceed those of natural gas vehicles. Boris Buses: London’s Mayor Boris Johnson will leave office this year but is busy buying more of his “signature” hybrid buses, ordering another 195 from Wrightbus. This will eventually bring the total number of orders to a 1,000 of which 600 are already in service. Potential successors to the mayor already said they would not continue to aim for 2,000 hybrid buses by 2020. Instead, they would seek full electrification or “true” hybrids if not suspending infrastructure spending altogether.

Electric fleet in Frankfurt: The city added 35 electric cars to its official fleet as part of its procurement initiative. Departments and offices could apply for monetary support and Frankfurt spent all 200,000 euros initially reserved. They are based on the platform of the Hyundai Elantra and Kia Forte, respectively, and can be expected by 2017. The all-electric model will come from Hyundai, possibly in the same year.

BMW i5 update: An electric and a PHEV variant of the i5 are becoming more likely. AutoBild summarises presumptions so far: it will be bigger than the i3 but use the same electric motor, while the PHEV will be coupled with an engine doubling as range extender. Materials will include carbon, but less to keep the cost down. The price is presumed to be around 5,000 euros higher than a comparable 3-series BMW. The launch is expected by 2019.
