Bentley confirms plug-in plans: There is an electric sports car cooking that will utilise Porsche’s Mission E platform, Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer confirmed. A first concept appeared in Geneva this year where the EXP 12 Speed 6e wowed a crowd. Expect production to commence by the end of the decade but first there will be three Bentley PHEV, namely the Bentayga, Continental and Flying Spur.
Luxury PHEV: Mercedes positions the S 560 e as the S 500 e’s successor at the IAA. The novel plug-in hybrid drive allows for electric cruising over 50 kilometres and offers 90 kW plus the 270 kW of the engine. It is the 8th model in Daimler’s plug-in line-up, only an on sale date is missing.

UK sees more scrappage schemes: Five more carmakers have followed Ford, Mercedes and Hyundai by launching scrappage schemes in the UK. VW realises its plans and pays British drivers up to 6,000 pounds when they scrap older diesel cars and buy a new model of the VW group. Further schemes will be introduced by Nissan, Renault, Toyota and Kia – with saving potentials around 2,000 pounds. However, Nissan is the only carmaker to particularly encourage to buy EVs. While VW’s programme targets diesel cars the other schemes work with any car bought before 2010.

Toyota’s next hybrid generation: The Japanese carmaker shows its C-HR Hy-Power Concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show, developed by its European Design Centre in France. The first teaser photo hints to a sporty crossover version of the current C-HR, while the name promises higher performance. So far, the C-HR comes with a 1.8 litre combustion engine and a 122 PS electric motor.
Showtime for the Project One: Ahead of Frankfurt’s IAA, Daimler presents a teaser of the Mercedes-AMG Project One, a hyper car full of Formula 1 hybrid tech, but created to conquer the road. Alcraft promotes EV rendering: The British start-up has unveiled first pictures of its GT concept car and is about to show a 33-percent scale foam model at the Cenex LCV event at Millbrook this week. In order to create a full-size version, the company has launched a crowdfunding campaign, hoping to gather 600,000 pounds. The GT shall come with 3 motors, an output of 600 hp, a range of 480 km and be ready for production kick-off in 2019, according to the company’s plans.

Vietnam to produce domestic cars: The country’s largest real-estate company Vingroup JSC intends to invest up to 3.5 bn dollars to enter the car production business. Its plans include to set up a manufacturing as well as a R&D complex and to create EVs along with sedans and sports vehicles for millions of Vietnamese. In a first phase, the company installs a factory worth 1 to 1.5bn dollars. The first cars shall roll off the lines within 2 years.

Hybrid version of Bentley’s Continental GT: While Bentley is about to put its next-gen Continental GT on display at the IAA event in Frankfurt, it confirms that the car will also be available as petrol-electric version, equipped with the same tech as the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. The Continental GT Hybrid’s electric range shall cover 31 miles, further details have not yet been given.

First Model 3 is out and real and truly looks like the pre-production version. Elon Musk tweeted the premier picture from the production run that has just started on Friday. A colleague bought him the Model 3 no. 1 for his 46th birthday but the EV maker hopes to produce up to 20,000 units a day comes December and as always, the plan is ambitious and will ultimately influence the stock market. There, Tesla has lost its pole position to GM again, after slightly disappointing deliveries in Q2.

Micro mobility by BMW: Motorbikes and bicycles are nothing new for BMW but this electric kick scooter is. Developed together with ZEG and distributed via Kettler, both bike makers, the X2City is classed as pedelec level, that assists up to 25 kph with a 35 km range. Expect a price below 2,500 euros comes autumn. Naturally, the stand-up scooter folds but its almost 20 kilos won’t be ideal to carry.
Renault Brilliance: Renault-Nissan also ventures into old-new markets as it acquires 49 percent of Brilliance’s bus business to strengthen its position in China’s light commercial vehicle sector. The JV partners will invest a combined 1.5bn yuan (221m dollars) and most of the LCVs will be electrified.
Poland on the offensiv-e? ‘Electromobility Poland’ is the government-led tender to make a small electric car in and for Poland. Projected start for serial production is by 2018/19 and the jury is currently looking into over 90 applicants. Meanwhile though, two more electric models have emerged. Bentley to borrow from Porsche? It looks like the Mission E may not be exclusive to just one VW luxury brand but could make it into an electric Bentley, too. While the Brits have not made any definite announcement, they did eye the tech Porsche is currently developing for its electric model, Automotive News reports. After all, a sporty drive would suit the two-seater EXP 12 Speed 6e EV Concept Bentley just displayed in Geneva and Volkswagen is looking into synergies wherever it can.

Sino-Swedish synergies are also what Volvo seeks for its first ever EV. The Geely-owned carmaker said it will utilise the same factory in Chinese Luqiao, that shall also make Lync’s 01 and the Volvo XC40. The Swedes aim for a price below 40,000 dollars, hence the production abroad that is to start by 2019. Kia got the whole hybrid family together in Geneva, where the Korean carmaker displays both the PHEV variants of the Niro and the Optima Sportswagon. Both shall hit the market early this autumn.
Hyundai’s hydrogen concept: The FE Fuel Cell Concept is on display in Geneva. It comes equipped with Hyundai’s 4th gen H2 technology, that is said to be 20 percent lighter and 10% more efficient than the one used inside the ix35 Fuel Cell. The study could go as far as 800 km and elements of it may make it into Hyundai’s H2 SUV due in 2018.

Peugeot plug-in concept: The French will bring the Instinct Concept to Geneva, a study that embodies Peugeot’s vision of autonomous and connected driving. The future is at least partially electric – the concept is equipped with a 300 hp plug-in hybrid system.
Seat’s first electric car has been revealed at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona as planned. It is indeed the Mii that utilises VW e-Up technology. While the first models will serve as shared electric cars for employees in Spain, rumour has it the Mii EV may hit the market by 2019.
High-level lobbying: Initially, China wanted to force automakers to shift 8 percent of their production to electric and hybrid vehicles in 2018. This may now be moved to 2019 and the percentage possibly lowered. Germany had followed complaints by makers like Volkswagen, whose electrification remains slow but was echoed by Chinese manufacturers. Details of the new rules are currently being worked out in China.
Mini to leave Britain? As a “hard Brexit” becomes more likely, BMW ponders to move production of the electric Mini from Oxford to Leipzig or Regensburg, Handelsblatt has learnt. The Germans may also tap Dutch Nedcar, which already builds two Mini models for BMW.
E-SUV by Bentley: The British luxury brand sees a market for a smaller SUV just below the Bentayga and considers making it all-electric, according to head of technology Rolf Frech. But such a Bentley EV would kick off no sooner than by 2020 and only after planned PHEV variants.
Tesla and FF appoint new CFOs: Tesla’s CFO Jason Wheeler will abandon his post in April to be replaced by former CFO Deepak Ahuja. Wheeler is off to work on public policies, a bold move in the current political climate. Over at Faraday Future, Stefan Krause, former executive at BMW and Deutsche Bank, is to take care of finances at the new EV maker and will have a lot to sort out.

Bentley adds e-power: The British luxury brand wants to offer a hybrid variant of every one of its future models, Automotive News reports, quoting Bentley CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer. The first one on the list will be the Bentayga, scheduled for 2018, followed by the next generation Continental GT.
Chinese manufacturer GAC Motors presented a PHEV crossover called Enspirit at the motor show in Detroit. It has an all-electric range of 80 km. The carmaker also showed its all-electric GE3, which is based on GAC’s new EV platform. Range is estimated at 300 km. The GE3 will become available in China from June and will be marketed under the Trumpchi brand.
Bolt-based: General Motors wants to build a number of electric cars based on the Chevrolet Bolt platform, CEO Mary Barra said in an interview in Detroit. She did not, however, spill any more details.

New Lexus: The carmaker wants to launch the series version of the UX Concept that it unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October. Autocar learned the compact SUV will also be offered as a hybrid under the name of UX250h and will apparently replace the Lexus CT. Moreover, Lexus is planning a seven-seater version of its RX, which will also be sold as a hybrid from 2018.
No PHEVs for the U.S.: The diesel scandal also affects plug-in hybrids, Car and Driver reports. Apparently, the VW Group scrapped plans to sell in the Audi Q7 e-tron in the States, as well as PHEV variants for the A6 and A7, which would combine an electric motor and 3-L diesel engine. There will also be no modified versions featuring petrol engines for the U.S., meaning the Audi A3 e-tron will remain the only Audi PHEV sold there.
Electric start-up scene: U.S. start-up Rivian Automotive has purchased a former Mitsubishi plant in Michigan, investing 175m dollars and wants to begin churning out EVs from 2019. A first model could already be unveiled this year.

Fisker reloaded: EMotion is the name Henrik Fisker chose for his new electric model. It has been unveiled in full and is said to feature graphene-based batteries with a 400 mile range. They have been developed by Nanotech, Fisker Inc’s power pack division. The electric car is aggressively styled from the outside but the designer promises the interior to provide legroom comparable to that of a luxury sedan – like Tesla. Launch is set for 2017.

Future Mobility to come true: Tencent’s EV unit will invest 1.9bn dollars into a facility in China to make 300,000 electric cars and batteries a year. A schedule has not been given but with Foxconn as a backer as well as BMW i8 designer Carsten Breitfeld it is likely Future Mobility will succeed.
Further future mobility: Guangzhou Auto plans to invest in its new energy vehicle business and thus seeks to sell up to 15bn yuan (2.2bn dollars) worth of shares. State-owned GAC said the proceeds would be used in 10 projects, with nearly 1/3 of the funds to be spent on R&D.
New Zoe for UK: Renault’s best-selling electric car and its latest 41 kWh battery can be ordered on the Isles now. Prices start at 17,845 GBP after incentives and deliveries will begin in January.

Tesla masterplan: CEO Elon Musk announced a new “masterplan” for the EV maker, as the current one went only from the Roadster to the Model 3. Possibilities are of course endless and Musk did not hint in which direction he wants to go, but it’s clearly a move to keep investors interested. Meanwhile, Tesla started on a three month “Electric Road Trip” around the world to meet enthusiasts and promote its EVs.

Keeping diesel at the gate: A number of German cities like Berlin, Munich and Stuttgart would like to ban diesel cars in certain zones and implement a blue pollution badge. The problem: so far there is no legal basis for them to keep polluters out, but Germany’s Environment Ministry hopes to agree on the details for the badge before autumn.

Electric Mulsanne: The Bentley’s V8 could be replaced with an electric drivetrain, according to Autocar, mainly because China is tightening legislation. It looks like going “full electric will be the only way” to still sell cars in some Chinese cities in the near future, says Bentley’s product manager Holzgartner -a trend that could catch on in Europe.
German buses from Azerbaijan: Eurabus has signed a deal to assemble its electric buses in Ganja in Azerbaijan in the future. The electric drivetrain for the 12-metre-long bus will be delivered by German company Ziehl-Abegg Automotive GmbH.
New Nissan hybrid: Without much fanfare, Nissan now added the Murano Hybrid to its offering in the U.S. Only the SL and Platinum models are available with a hybrid drivetrain that will cost customers an extra 3,000 dollars. Moreover, only about 600 hybrid units will be made available.
Test driving Toyota: Both Autoblog and Green Car Reports took the Prius Prime for a spin. The latter hails the fact that one can now lock in the EV Mode, so “your carefully planned, fossil-fuel-free day” will no longer be ruined when stepping on the accelerator. Autoblog is especially taken by the redesign, but says that it will have a hard time competing with real EVs.

Audi’s electric plans: Audi expects between 25 and 30 percent of their vehicles sold to be electric by 2025, according to German Manager Magazin. That would mean roughly 700,000 vehicles annually. The manufacturer will continue, however, to source battery cells from Korean companies LG and Samsung.

Prototypes from RWTH Aachen: Following the success of their StreetScooter, students at the RWTH Aachen have prototyped another electric vehicle. The e.GO Life will cost just 12,500 euros, and 100 pre-series vehicles will be made available in 2017. They expect to begin full production in 2018 and then produce up to 10,000 units.

BAIC increases funds: Chinese automaker BAIC BJEV has invested 3bn yuan (452m dollar) in the construction of operations and R&D, including centres based in Italy and Japan. Further funds will support the creation of yearly four to six new models. The company will also be providing electric vehicles for Uber.
Electric Skoda: Skoda plans to launch their first electric vehicle in 2020. The SUV is based on Volkswagen’s new MEB battery-electric platform, has a target range of 300 miles and a 15-minute charging time. By placing the batteries in the floor the new SUV will also have space for three rows of seats. The PHEV variants of the Superb and Kodiaq will launch one year earlier.
Jetta hybrid pulled: Volkswagen Group plans to drop their Jetta Hybrid in 2017 in the U.S., due to low interest from consumer. While it was sold 5,655 times in 2013, only 277 units left dealerships since the beginning of this year. The Jetta was the company’s only remaining hybrid offered in the U.S.

GM engine facility: General Motors is readying its latest Powertrain Performance and Racing Center in Pontiac, Michigan. There, the firm will work on race engines but also on fuel cell and hybrid technology. Opening in July, GM hopes to facilitate transfer between performance and production.
Bentley hyper car? Depending on the Bentayga’s success, the British brand might return to the race track, although not in the LMP1 class. Such a race car could then also make it onto the road, in a toned down version of course, and could thus utilise technology from Porsche’s Mission E by 2020.
Motorola money for MIT: Pellion Technologies, a start-up founded by a team from MIT, has received an undisclosed amount from Motorola Solutions. Pellion is commercialising magnesium-ion battery technology, said to have double the energy density of comparable Li-ion cells.
Renault will stay in the Formula E and has just prolonged its contract for another two years. This means team e.dams will continue to race at least until the end of the season four. Renault is working on its own electric motor and aims for both the Driver’s and Constructor’s title.

Tesla battery facility in Germany? Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel says Elon Musk approached the German government with plans for a battery plant, or rather for the funding thereof. Both Daimler and Volkswagen have underlined the importance of joint domestic battery cell production – and their quest for taxpayer funding. Maybe increased competition will have the industry battle it out on their own.

Bentley electrifies: The Bentayga will be succeeded by a compact SUV that may be launched as hybrid version within three years, Autocar reports. The EXP 10 Speed 6 is also scheduled to go serial around 2020 and will then be electric, too.
New Leaf to be light-weight: Nissan’s next-gen EV will have a chassis made from carbon fibre, Automotive News has learned. Together with its 60-kWh battery, the new Leaf could have a range of 500 km, while being charged inductively.
Merkel bemoaned emission rules set by the EPA as early as 2010, a report first published by German Wirtschaftswoche says. Apparently, Germany’s chancellor tried to put in a word on behalf of Volkswagen. In vain, as we know now, since VW found its own way to “deal” with the problem.
Limited edition BMW i3: The German carmaker will launch a special edition of its electric car in the U.S.. The ‘Shadow Sport’ is limited to 50 units and is (obviously) mainly black. First shown via Periscope yesterday, the special i3 will be on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
