Tesla with record-breaking quarter: The American EV maker has accumulated 25,000 sales in Q1 2017, that’s 69% above the first quarter of 2016 and the company’s best result ever. The Model S accounts for 13,450 sales, the Model X for 11,550. Furthermore, 4,650 EV’s are currently on the way to their new owners and to be reflected in the second quarter’s statistics. Taking those into account, Tesla claims to have set a new record in production: 25,418 EV’s rolled off the lines this quarter.

Kia to introduce FCV: The Korean carmaker intends to launch its first FCV within three years time. The fuel cell Kia is to use hydrogen technology from Hyundai, due to launch by 2018. The FE Fuel Cell Concept of Hyundai could be seen recently on display in Geneva.

Peugeot to spice up SUV 3008: By 2019 the French carmaker intends to launch a high performance hybrid version of its new SUV 3008. While not quite a GTi, the PHEV will benefit from AWD and 300 hp under the hood. In the same year, Peugeot wants to offer an all-electric version of its 208.

Hybrid SUV by Spyker: Dutch sports car maker Spyker is going hybrid with an SUV dubbed D8 Peking to Paris in memory of the firm’s participation in a rally of the same name in 1907. The luxury SUV is to couple a Koenigsegg V8 with an electric powertrain and may be shown in Geneva next year.

Crazy race: Abt Audi Sports driver Lucas di Grassi’s first win of the season in the Mexico City ePrix was most memorable. The Formula E driver started from 18th position and even had to make an extra pit stop to change his rear wing before taking and keeping the lead.

Spyker’s incarnation: The Dutch company’s partnership with Volta Voltaré is beginning to bear fruits. Not only will Spyker start offering electric cars, but also electric planes under the new label SpykerAero. While the aircraft will have a range extender, it will use the same electric drive by Volta, as the EV does. Spyker is looking into setting up a Formula E team – a move that would only make sense given the scale of the promised electrification.

Tesla tweetstorm: Elon Musk was very active on Twitter providing more infos on the Model 3. The base model will feature a rear wheel drive only but AWD is available as an option for less than 5,000 dollars. The trunk does fit a bike, while the backseats have enough space for three child seats.

Two new EVs to triple sales? BYD places high hopes in its latest electric models for China, the Qin EV300 and the e5. Both boast a range of more than 186 miles and can double as a power source. BYD expects to triple sales this year as it targets to sell 150,000 new energy vehicles.

Daimler-LeEco alliance? International Business Times reports that mangers from both companies met in Peking to talk about a possible corporation in the fields of connected EVs and carsharing. Is this LeEco’s (aka LeTV’s) next coup? The Chinese are already working with Aston Martin, Faraday Future and Beijing Automotive.

Toyota-C-HR-2016C-HR hybrid scheduled for late 2016: Toyota officially presented the new crossover that will also be made available with the same hybrid system as the Prius. Productions start is set for the end of the year. Meanwhile, the manufacturer showed the especially luxurious and limited edition ‘Sapphire’ of its RAV4 Hybrid.

Volvo bets on small hybrids: Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson told Autocar that 2018 XC40 will be the first to use the company’s new compact modular architecture (CMA), followed by V40 and S40 variants. Moreover, all 40 series model will be available as PHEVs. Samuelsson says that small hybrids will replace diesel cars “on a 1:1 basis.”

Combustion engine part of the mix: The small-volume manufacturer took the wraps off its C8 Preliator in Geneva. Due to lack of time, its sports a V8 instead on an electric motor. But Spyker CEO Victor Muller says that combustion engines will remain part of the portfolio, as he plans to also build luxurious petrol-powered cars.

New BMW e-bike: Right on time for the new biking season, the Bavarians are bringing a new pedelec to the market. The Cruise e-bike with Bosch powertrain and 400 Wh battery starts at 3,100 euros.

Mitsubishi electric truck: The Japanese unveiledtheir Fuso Canter E-Cell at the Work Truck Show in Indianapolis. The vehicle boast 100 kW and can go 100 km on one charge. It was just recently sighted during testing in Portugal, but will first be introduced in the U.S.

Other than that it will be called C8 Preliator, there is little information about the sports car. But it was previously suggested that it will be electric. Tesla to make money this year: CEO Elon Musk promised that the carmaker will become profitable this year, forecasting a 60 to 80 percent in vehicle sales. Nano Flowcell road-ready: The Quantino has gotten the green light to hit roads in Europe, the Luxembourg-based carmaker says. Testing will begin this year already; an opportunity to actually gather some actual data to support (or not) NanoFlow’s claim that its car has a range of 1,000 km.

From Sweden to India: Swedish Clean Motion has launched its Zbee in India. The electric trike is destined for Delhi, Noida, Jaipur and other cities, as the company aims to sell over 1,000 Zbees in India by March 2017. The trike is built in India and has a range of 50 km. Moreover, Clean Motion says that it will train Female drivers to operate it.

Honda styles hybrid: The Japanese carmaker plans to offer a better looking version of its Vezel Hybrid, which will be called Vezel Hybrid RS. It will look more sporty and darker and will go on sale in Japan at the end of this month. Only then, full specs will be released.

Mirai review: Steve Cropley raises his glass (of water) after driving Toyota’s fuel cell pioneer, the Mirai. While the drive is “reassuringly easy,” the “impossibly limited” supply of hydrogen is a rather uneasy affair. Cropley is sure about FCVs having a future, but it might just not be their time just yet.

BAIC wants to increase EV production: Beijing Electric Vehicle, BAIC’s subsidiary for electric cars, has announced an ambitious five-year plan. It wants to increase annual production to 800,000 EVs and PHEVs by 2020, shooting for yearly sales worth 60bn yuan (9.1bn dollars).

China fights misuse of subsidies: Some smaller companies are suspected to get their hands on government money by producing cheap vehicles, and selling them to their own car hiring companies, which only exist on paper. They may now face investigations and scrutiny.

Tesla eyes China: Elon Musk told Engadget that he is looking to find a partner for a joint venture in China by mid-2016, as well as a location for a production facility in the country.

Minimalistic EV from China: The Qianli Sea Turtle only has room for two – one in front, the other in the back. The electric motor has an output of only 2.2 kW and is mated to a lead-acid battery. And the price tag is minimalist, too: The EV goes for a mere 23,450 yuan (3,754 dollars).

New hope for Spyker: Dutch luxury car maker Spyker is no longer officially bankrupt, an appeals court ruled this week. Spyker thus returns to the status of “moratorium of payment,” seeking a quick deal with creditors. The company plans to pursue previous plans and merge with an U.S.-based manufacturer of electric airplanes in order to use their technologies for electric Spyker cars “in the foreseeable future”.

CO2 comparison: Transport and Environment has analysed average new car emissions in European countries. The Netherlands is the first country to bring CO2 emissions below 110 g/km and its average of 109,1 g/km is the lowest in the EU. French-German battery alliance? At an EU summit in a few weeks, Germany and France want to present common flagship projects, i.e. in the field of e-mobility. According to German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel, the development of a new generation of batteries for EVs could be one such project.

Ferrari-FXX-KHyper-hybrid Ferrari unveiled: The Italians take the wraps off their race track version of the LaFerrari, called the Ferrari FXX K. The hybrid is said to deliver a maximum output of 1050 hp and 900 Nm of torque. Prices and production numbers haven’t been announced yet.
