Electric sewage pump-out boat developed with Yale Uni

Torqeedo has equipped the world’s first solar-powered sewage pump-out boat in cooperation with Yale Uni. The vessel was delivered to Branford in Connecticut where it will prevent the discharge of untreated human waste into the area’s waterways.

Deutz acquires Torqeedo: German engine specialist Deutz takes over Munich-based Torqeedo in order to accelerate the market launch of new electric and hybrid drive systems in the off-highway sector. The company considers Torqeedo a catalyst for its “e-Deutz strategy” and plans to serial produce first innovative components within two years – much earlier than if Deutz would have stayed on its own. Torqeedo has been particularly known for finding integrated electric and hybrid drive solutions for boats.

EasyJet to develop electric airplanes: Already, when start-up Wright Electric showed its concept of an electric-powered short distance airplane for 150 passengers and a range of up to 300 miles in March, it mentioned a likely partnership with UK airline EasyJet. Six month later, this cooperation is official: The partners’ aim is to put all-electric airplanes into operation within the next ten years.

Starting with the mild-hybrid as new base motor, plug-ins and all-electric variants will complete the palette. Five pure EVs can be expected by 2021 with three running under Geely’s Swedish flagship and the other two bearing the Polestar label. The latter is about to be remodelled as electric brand under the guidance of Volvo’s former head of design, Thomas Ingenlath (we reported). With the new strategy under way, ICE will see a phase out that is likely to be completed by 2023 following Volvo’s five-year product lifecycle.

Hybrid autonomous system: Swedish Einride has unveiled its first full-scale prototype. The T-Pod is a remote-controlled electric truck and with a cabin for a driver missing, it looks futuristic, or a bit odd. It can transport 15 euro pallets and travel 124 miles on one charge. Charging stations are being worked on as well and Einride hopes to have a first full version of the T-Pod ready by autumn.

The company’s marine electric propulsion has come aboard the Queen Elizabeth II’s vessel Gloriana, where it will not replace a diesel or other engine but support a different form of power – humans, who formerly drove the row-barge single-handedly so to speak.
