BMW and Torqeedo to build electric racing yacht
Around the world with zero emissions – the dream is not new but this time it is not about flying but sailing and Torqeedo and BMW want to make this vision a reality. They are jointly designing a yacht to compete in the Vendée Globe solo, around-the-world race in 2020.
Off-highway hybrid concept by Deutz
Deutz is coming to the Intermat in Paris to debut its off-highway hybrid concept this week. Coupling a diesel engine and a 55 kW electric motor with a 40 kWh battery built by BMWi, the study is the first result of the E-DEUTZ program established in 2017.
Electric boats to clean up China’s waterways
Germany’s Torqeedo has received a large order from China, where the mega manufacturing hub Suzhou struggles to clean up its act. 177 workboats powered by Torqeedo’s all-electric drive are to be deployed on the region’s many waterways to scoop up debris.
Deutz, Torqeedo, EasyJet, Audi, Bosch, Cobi.
Deutz acquires Torqeedo: German engine specialist Deutz takes over Munich-based Torqeedo in order to accelerate the market launch of new electric and hybrid drive systems in the off-highway sector. The company considers Torqeedo a catalyst for its “e-Deutz strategy” and plans to serial produce first innovative components within two years – much earlier than if Deutz would have stayed on its own. Torqeedo has been particularly known for finding integrated electric and hybrid drive solutions for boats.
EasyJet to develop electric airplanes: Already, when start-up Wright Electric showed its concept of an electric-powered short distance airplane for 150 passengers and a range of up to 300 miles in March, it mentioned a likely partnership with UK airline EasyJet. Six month later, this cooperation is official: The partners’ aim is to put all-electric airplanes into operation within the next ten years.
Audi’s Formula E racing car: Ahead of its Formula E debut in December, team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler revealed its first all-electric racer: the Audi e-tron F04. The team’s pilots will be Daniel Abt (Germany) and title defender Lucas di Grassi (Brazil). Audi is the first German car manufacturer to race in Formula E.

Bosch eBike Systems readies Cobi takeover: Bosch’s electric bike unit waits approval of the antitrust authorities to acquire Frankfurt-based Cobi. The start-up’s devices integrate all sorts of bike technologies like navigation or fitness applications in a smartphone which can be locked and charged on the handlebar.
Volvo, Daimler + BAIC, Einride, Torqeedo, Hyundai.
All to be electrified at Volvo: From 2019 every Volvo will be electrified to a varying degree. Starting with the mild-hybrid as new base motor, plug-ins and all-electric variants will complete the palette. Five pure EVs can be expected by 2021 with three running under Geely’s Swedish flagship and the other two bearing the Polestar label. The latter is about to be remodelled as electric brand under the guidance of Volvo’s former head of design, Thomas Ingenlath (we reported). With the new strategy under way, ICE will see a phase out that is likely to be completed by 2023 following Volvo’s five-year product lifecycle.

Daimler and BAIC expand their JV operation with 5bn yuan (735m USD) to flow into EV production in China by 2020 including the infrastructure. A three-digit million euro sum of that investment is destined to build a new battery factory by Beijing Benz Automotive Co. (BBAC) in the People’s Republic.
Hybrid autonomous system: Swedish Einride has unveiled its first full-scale prototype. The T-Pod is a remote-controlled electric truck and with a cabin for a driver missing, it looks futuristic, or a bit odd. It can transport 15 euro pallets and travel 124 miles on one charge. Charging stations are being worked on as well and Einride hopes to have a first full version of the T-Pod ready by autumn.
BMW batteries take to life on sea as Torqeedo is using i3 power packs for energy storage in its Deep Blue electric drive systems for motorboats. The batteries are new and not recycled though and come with the full capacity of 30.5 kWh.
On sale Hyundai PHEV: British drivers will get their hands on the Hyundai Ioniq plug-in hybrid this month. It is priced from 24,995 pounds, including the £2,500 Plug-In Car Grant.
Straddling bus a fraud: Police in China have arrested 32 people for illegal fundraising for a scrapped project to create a “straddling bus“. The idea to lift commuters above congestion caught a lot of attention but was finally scrapped shortly after the first test run of the TEB-1, or Transit Elevated Bus.
Repowering the Queen.
Torqeedo has become a supplier for the Royal Family. The company’s marine electric propulsion has come aboard the Queen Elizabeth II’s vessel Gloriana, where it will not replace a diesel or other engine but support a different form of power – humans, who formerly drove the row-barge single-handedly so to speak.
Ashok Leyland, Audi, Tesla, Torqeedo.
Ashok Leyland unveils first e-bus in India: The Optare Versa EV Bus seats up to 44 people. It is available in four sizes, ranging from 10 to 12 metres and is the first zero emission bus in the country. The bus was shown at the Bus and Special Vehicles Show 2015 in Greater Noida.
Q7 turns up the heat: The new Audi is the first plug-in hybrid to come with a heat pump instead of a resistive-based heating system. The car therefore requires less electrical energy to heat the cabin and has more energy left to go the extra mile. The technology is already featured in pure EVs.
Expensive repairs: Even dents, scratches and other minor injuries can leave Tesla Model S owners with a major bill. One reason is that car’s body is made from aluminium. Because the material” has no memory,” the car’s body cannot simply be pushed back into place. Therefore, even small repairs can require extensive labour.
Torqeedo presents Deep Blue Hybrid system: The technology enables boat owners to harness solar, wind and regenerative power, as well as from the grid. The system supplies energy to the ship’s hybrid drive and all electrical loads on board. It would i.e. allow work boats to power tools directly from the battery.
