Electric taxi fleet: 50 electric cabs will start taking passengers in Montreal in mid-November. The pilot is run by start-up Taxelco, that bought the city’s second-biggest cab operator and plans to electrify the entire 500-strong fleet. Taxis, including Teslas, Kia Soul EV and Nissan Leaf, can be hailed via app.

UK invests 15 billion pounds: The government announces the biggest road-building programme for almost half a century to build and upgrade 1,300 miles of roads. The ‘Road investment strategy’ also includes a plan to create new charge points every 20 miles across the road network.

Record-setting EV order: The Chinese city of Hangzhou has ordered 2,000 all-electric buses and 1,000 electric taxis from BYD – one of the world’s largest all-electric fleets ordered to date. By making special arrangements, BYD will be able to already deliver 1,000 buses and 500 taxis by the end of 2014.

Swiss service centre: Tesla opened a new service centre and showroom in Möhlin, Switzerland, on Friday. The 1,000 sq-metre facility will serve Tesla drivers in the Basel region. It is Tesla’s fifth site in the alpine country (after Geneva, St. Gallen, Winterthur and Zurich), and more locations are to follow this year.

Trial lease: Fleet management company Leaseplan now offers its clients the Nissan Leaf for a three-month trial period, to let them find out if the car is suitable for their business operations.
