In comparison, VW sold 136,400 battery electric cars in the first three months of 2024, compared to 216,000 electric cars in the same period in 2025. The global BEV share of the Group’s sales thus rose from six to ten per cent, as Volkswagen delivered 2.13 million cars across all drive types (+1.4%).

The Volkswagen Group recorded strong growth in electric car sales in Europe (+113 per cent) and the US (+51 per cent) – in Western Europe, 19 per cent of total sales were purely electric. However, things went less well in the much more relevant market in China, where EV deliveries fell by 37 per cent.

In other words, while the Volkswagen Group’s brands still delivered 41,000 battery-electric cars in China in Q1 2024, this figure fell to just 25,900 units in 2025. At the same time, EV sales in the US increased from 13,200 to 20,400 vehicles and could thus soon overtake China as the second most important BEV region for the VW Group. However, Europe remains the most important market, where the Q1 result for 2024 (74,400 electric cars) more than doubled, reaching 157,800 units. The rest of the world also saw strong growth of 62.2 per cent from 7,800 to 12,700 BEVs.

However, the ‘Brand Group Core’ also performed well, with an increase of 57.2 per cent to 151,200 BEVs.
