Reservation books open for Lucid Air in Europe

The US-American startup Lucid Motors has now opened European reservation books for the first model Lucid Air. The startup says it will officially unveil the Tesla-like debut car in New York in April. Deliveries in Europe are scheduled to begin at the end of 2021.

For a refundable deposit of 1,000 dollars (900 euros or 970 Swiss francs), Lucid Air can now be pre-ordered specifically in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Spain, France, Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Iceland and Monaco. Expansion into other countries is planned, according to the California-based company.

For the production of the all-electric luxury sedan, Lucid Motors recently started building an electric car plant in Casa Grande in the US state of Arizona. More than 300 million dollars will be invested in the first phase of the factory construction that is scheduled for completion by the end of 2020. Initially, only Lucid Air will be built there; in the latter stages of expansion, the plant will take over production of several models.

Lucid Motors will have to straighten out its schedule. In 2017, the startup set itself the goal of building 10,000 units of the Air as early as 2019 – which has not happened yet. Now it is said that production for the US market should start at the end of 2020. Against this background, the company has now brought a new production expert into the team: In the summer of 2019, Tesla’s production manager Peter Hochholdinger moved to Lucid Motors. Some of the money for the construction of the plant will come from the Middle East. In September 2018, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF invested one billion dollars in Lucid Motors.
